I cannot recommend my weekend to anyone on DU!
I spent most of the weekend bailing water out of a back bedroom, and tearing out a ruined carpet. Our hot water heater is on the backside of the house. The wooden door frame around it has rotted out at the bottom just enough to allow water to seep onto the slab. I have managed the plug it for now and will repair it when this rain stops. I must have vacuumed up 30 gallons of water before figuring out what the problem was. What a weekend!!

5. I'm sorry
I've dealt with broken hot water heaters a few times. What a mess. It's awful.

7. It's rain water thats seeping in
My yard is like a small river right now. Water coming off the hill and seeping through the retaining wall. So. CA. is about 4" away from an all time record rainfall.

8. Ooh, yes, hills plus houses plus record rainfall = bad thing.
You might want to consider having a french drain put in, for the future, although the record rainfall will hopefullly not reoccur.

OTOH, what with global climate change and all -- it might!
