Cats... the bulimics of the animal world
Why do they do that?

My cats gorge themselves full every time I refill their food dish -- which i do as soon as they empty it, so it's not that they're starving -- and then they immediately puke half of it up.

Not such a problem if they later return to the scene of the crime and eat it (mmmmm, partially digested cat food), but increasingly, they leave it for me to step in or sit in later.

1. I'd feed them less at a time
My mom's cat eats until she vomits, so my mom can only put a little food down at a time. They probably think they have to compete with each other so they just eat and eat and eat, thinking there won't be more later.

I fill my cats' dish once a day, they eat what they want and always have some left over at the end of the day.

2. My cats do that too.
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 01:22 PM by CottonBear
Today one of them puked up kibbles right in front of the litter box. Usually, she leaves the puke in the middle of the living room where I can step on it with my bare feet.

I try to just give them small amounts of food at any one time. They eat several small meals a day. That helps with the puking. I overfed them this morning. My bad.

4. My Siamese tends to do that and to eat too quickly
I pick up his food when I feel he has had enough. I won't let him inhale an entire can of Fancy Feast at one sitting.

I am feeding the cats Organix dry cat food and Foster's and Smith Hairball Control now. I've noticed a decrease in the barfs as of late. If the cats are indoor cats they may have hairballs, and you might want to add a ribbon on Hairball Remedy to their food.
