Kyocera Wireless Corp. has stopped shipping a model of its Phantom, Rave and Blade cell phones, because of a customer report that the phone blew up, company officials said Thursday.

No one was injured in the incident, but the San Diego-based company has temporarily stopped shipping the KE400/KX400 series phone, sold under the brands Phantom, Rave and Blade.

Happened to my wife. She likes to put her old Nokia down in a way that allows her to see the screen when it rings...propped up...so that she can read the caller ID. Well, one day she dropped it into a short pen/pencil cup on her desk. Within two minutes it had exploded; pieces of the ceramic cup it was in were found up to 10 feet from her desk, and one sharp chunk was embedded in her computer printer next to the point of explosion. She wasn't hurt (thankfully) because she'd walked over to help a student.

After looking at it and having her describe the cup to me, I figured out what happened: There were paperclips in the bottom of the cup that had caused a dead short. When a battery shorts, it begins heating up and produces explosive gasses. At some point it sparked and ignited the gasses, which by this time saturated the air in and around the cup, which caused the small explosion.

When we sent Nokia the phone, photos of the explosion site, and informed them that this ocurred in a classroom full of five year olds, they were very apologetic and sent us not only a new phone, but gift certificates that covered our wireless bill for a year :-)

Seems you could design a "smart" battery that will detect when it has been shorted and then disconnect itself from its terminals. The key is that this assembly is sealed. Would look like a standard battery.

8. introduce moving parts to a battery?

If I were gonna introduce moving parts to a battery, I would do it in a way as to not keep it from blowing up, but allowing the option of purposeful explosions.

Can you say Cellular Hand Grenade? There are countless uses for such a device.

9. Oh, great, I have a Nokia...

Just read an article today about how Nokia phones are blowing up in the 3rd world (no, the OLD 3rd world, not parts of the US midwest)

Nokia says it's because people are buying "bootleg" batteries for $2 instead of the "good" ones from Nokia for $40...

Sounds like the copies may be more faithful than Nokia wants to let on...

I don't think I'll carry it in my pants pocket anymore.
