Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Here's this guy, who has all these ugly thoughts, and imagines himself to be quite the success (in business and his leisurely pursuits, including the major one)... when really he's just another grunt. That's how I always took it.

a lot more violent detail in the book.

i think they were trying to juxtapose the image of a hard-charging wall st. young executive (an idealized situation that could be seen as evidence of actualization).

but through the veneer of success, the threat of impending dissolution ran through the book - in essence, the compulsive recitation of brand names, labels, etc. show the shallowness of this guy's world.

his murders i thought were largely fantasies he had no control over and helped to highlight the pathetic nature of reality he experienced.

Regarding the whole "fantasy vs. reality" issue.

In the scene where Bateman's secretary comes to his home for their "date", the director builds tension by having him approach her from behind with a pneumatic nail-gun. He holds it an inch from the back of her head...and the audience wonders, "will he do it?".

But the director has chosen a weapon which requires a complex arrangement of electricity and a noisy compressed-air source in which to run. In the state he's holding it, it's completely impotent. If I remember correctly, the air-hose is even seen dangling uselessly from the nail-gun.

The director is playing with the audience's sense of "reality", by creating tension in a potential murder scene which is not possible.

And, by the way, trivia fans, Canadians may remember the director's father, Charlie Fahrqueson.

I always do associate Huey Lewis and American Psycho because that's my favourite scene in the film. Apart from when the ATM tells Patrick to feed it the cat. And of course, Christian Bale exercizing in his jockey shorts.
