Jonathan Livingston Seagull....my daughter thought I was making this up

We were talking about Neil Diamond albums one day and I mentioned the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull. She had never heard of the movie or soundtrack and thought I was making it up.

"And what was the movie about?"

"It was about a seagull who wanted to be an individual and the movie was basically the seagull flying around to a Neil Diamond soundtrack."

"Wait, Neil Diamond did not write a soundtrack for a movie about a seagull!"

"Well, it was based on a very popular book."

"About a seagull?"

"Not just any seagull, he was special...."

I had to pull it up on the internet to show her. :)

Wonder what a kid nowadays would think after reading that. If it still says something today.

and see how I would relate to it at my age now. That could be interesting.

I doubt I could get her to read it. She seemed pretty unconvinced by the whole idea.

But the Neil Diamond soundtrack might have thrown her off. :)

And on her mindset. I suspect most kids would roll their eyes about their parents wanting them to read "some stupid book." Pity, because there's some good messages in there for the types of kids least likely to pay attention to them.

10. I didn't know a movie was made of this book.

I remember about 20 years ago reading it (in college) and writing home about it and how it changed me. I wonder if they thought I was nuts!
I need to check that out.

12. I've heard Bach wasn't happy with how it turned out.

Then again, I can't really see it making a feature length film.

And nowadays they've have to get some bullet-time FX in there, and a car chase scene with the 2006 Fords featured prominently, and with Angelina Jolie as the love interest.

The times have changed from those days when everyone had read JLS and wanted a sculpture of dolphins on their side tables.
