1. That would be a wonderful old house to buy.
It's probably a minefield of home problems that will drain your bank account faster than a B-rate home mortgage ever would, but to a guy like me, that's music to my ears! I love restoring old homes.

If you're serious about buying it, see if you can qualify for a loan on the place. If not, try and find someone (that you trust) to go in with you. You're not going to get scores of DUers to donate money, but you might find someone with decent credit and good debt-to-income ratio willing to move to that part of New York and work on a wonderful historic home.

If I wasn't attached to my current home a few thousand miles away, I'd buy the place myself.

4. I want du'ers to buy it as a statement of principle.
so can I count on you to buy a share? I love historic homes also. I plan on building high efficiency homes when I move there.

11. Not without a little homework.
I'd like to see an appraisal, a title report or abstract, and any and all permitted land uses. If it's truly Susan B's home, it will likely have restrictions on its use. For example, perhaps you can't live in it, and must allow the state to run tours of the place while you maintain the property.

But even if all that came back satisfactory, I would be reluctant to enter into a partnership with one thousand people I barely know, to own a 0.1% interest in an out-of-state investment property. I work in commercial real estate, and such business deals inevitably end up as a f***ing nightmare. I think Susan B deserves better.

22. I agree that it could be difficult. But I was throwing out an Idea
and want to do more research. And also it would be somewhat revolutionary in the fact that dems would come together on their own to claim a landmark for it's historic value as well as it's commercial value.

2. What a beautiful home.
I'll chip in, it would be great to have du'er own a house like that.
Where exactly is Greenwich? I know where that realtor is btw. But the realtor when I bought my house was really good if you need a contact.

3. Is it some kind of historical landmark?
I could easily be convinced to shell out $220 if the house is going to be preserved somehow.

(On a personal note, as a resident of Los Angeles, I can't imagine that a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom house could go for only 220,000!!)

You would have to know upstate NY. Farms with acerage sell for less than 200K.

I've been in Texas for years now. I can handle Republicans and I'd love to give NY my vote. I'm politically active, too. I know it's where I'm going to end up living. I need some space and I adore the beauty of the region there. I'm even in love with the way it smells. :)

29. I've always been a NYer
but from downstate. Up here after a thunderstorm the air just smells like pine trees and the sky is filled with stars. It was quite different to really be able to see stars like that. I miss the ocean but there are so many other things here. It does get cold though but the snow really isn't a big problem for getting around.

I know cold and snow. I miss having 4 seasons here in Texas. We have a very short spring that soon becomes so hot you're running around in practically nothing by May.

I am looking to relocate there very soon. I love the smell also. Clean fresh air and the smell of cows. I submitted my choice for the new county slogan "Come and smell our dairy air" they didn't like it, no sense of humor I guess.

25. Have you contacted
Skinner or one of the administrators? They might be able to help with this. Somehow seeing that flag in the front of that house, well it really means something there. This could be a first for any website to put a stamp on what our past and our future really means to us.

Kind of sums it all up. We can't fail in our fight against this administration, our country, our freedoms, our dreams are at stake.

33. I think it's a great idea. Check on property taxes $$$ in NYS.
I think it's a great idea.

I mentioned propert taxes on the other thread. We are closing on an under 200K house in Columbia Cty NY and the property taxes are almost $5000 a year. Each County and township vary, but NYS can have very high property taxes (seems like they are double PA/Wayne County - right over the border, for example).

Don't rely on the realtor or the owner, go to the County and get someone on the phone for taxes.

Maybe you could create some sort of foundation, fund it with donations, and purchase/maintain it out of the fund - maybe even make it a museum or B&B - with live in care taker.

36. Its not listed on the National Registry or NY Registry of historic places.
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 02:59 AM by Historic NY
You will need to check further on the claim that she grew up there. From the above link it shows that the family migrated from Mass. to Hardscrabble NY (outside Rochester)when she was fairly young. Prior she was in school in Pa. She also spent a couple years teaching in Canajoharie NY.

Nothing precludes a person from owing a historic property, one can also do what they wish with it even if it is listed. It also does not need to be open to the public. There is a National Susan B. Anthony historic site & home in Rochester.
