Further tales from the "My mom's a bitch" file...
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 11:15 AM by YellowRubberDuckie
I'm probably getting this great job at a juvenile detention center. They're starting background and reference checks on Monday. I tell my mother. Of course, she's finding the negative in the whole thing. The only thing wrong is that the job starts the first week of April. She thinks I should go work someplace...anyplace for a month, which I think is unfair to the people I would be working for, but she thinks since they won't know...
So, please tell me the truth. Should I get a job for a month even though I wouldn't be being fair to an employer I will probably like, or should I just wait? Thanks for your insight in advance...
Duckie

1. You could sign up with a temp agency.
I used a temp agency for brief breaks like that -- it worked well for me. (I did reception and data entry about 8 years ago, in the Chicago suburbs; paid anywhere between $7 and $12/hour, depending on the job.)

9. Yes, temp agencies are perfect for interim work....
and usually pay quite well.

2. Not fair to the interim employer...
... who thinks you will be on more or less permanently.

What you might consider doing is check with local temp agencies (oh, I know, I know) and ask them if they have any short-term assignments to fill in. Might make your mother calm down and would present you with no ethical qualms.

Cheers.

3. A career-related job is worth a few weeks' wait
Sign up at a temp agency (or just say you did) to keep your mom off your back.

4. Key phrase: "I am PROBABLY getting this great job..."
So therefore, I do not see it as you are getting a different, interim job for a month. I see it as, you have a job, and you PROBABLY (might, could, looks good but who the fuck knows) will get a better one.

So there is no "interim job." There is the one you have, and the one you THINK you will get.

Two months from now, you may still be working at the one you have. Take it.

5. Just my .02¢ worth - if you can find a job and be completely
up front with the employer about your temporary situation go for it but if not, I think situations like that just bite you in the butt somewhere down the road.

An employer often times has to spend a fair amount of money, time and resources on a new employee - wouldn't be fair to ask them to spend that on you and then you move on. They would be an extra month behind in filling their position not to mention the loss of training expenses and time.

If you need the cash, yard sale, bag groceries, be a fry cook, anything but don't be sneaky. You wouldn't feel good about yourself and that can't be bought off with a temporary paycheck. Like I said, my .02¢

6. "great job at a juvenile detention center" sounds like an oxymoron
Straight out of college I worked for a mental health hospital with inpatient care facilities for adolescents, and it was one of the roughest jobs i've ever had. However, it was great motivation to get into graduate school for psychology, and I was out of there and into grad school within three months.

The temp job solution sounds fine to me. I personally wouldn't have any qualms of quitting a job after a month if it didn't feel like it was something I could do, or hated. Our area has a lot of turnover in menial service sector jobs, so I wouldn't sweat it.

8. if you know you
are definitely going to get the job and you are not hard pressed for money wait till april. not really a cool thing to do to another employer to work for a month then quit. enjoy the time off because i think you need to "rest up" for this job.

10. I take it you're living at home?
Why not tell your mom you thought you'd spend the month helping her with chores/errands?

If your mom is as negative as mine was, ain't nothin she can't find to be negative about. It's an art with them, and you can't win. So, on second thought, maybe you would like to get out of the house for this month :) Good luck whatever you decide.

11. but she thinks since they won't know...
who taught you your morals, lol lol and a wink. hey i am with you. i feel unless you put that upfront, (and i doubt you would get the job), that you cannot in your own barometer of right and wrong, do this to an employer. i think it is wrong. i would see it as wrong if i were to do that. and being an employer, knowing the cost and patience in training someone, about two weeks of uselessness to get a valued employee out of training, i think it would be totally wrong

good for you

snicker at mom for setting such a poor example for you in the right and wrong issue

12. Tell her you're doing the companies a favor
since it will cost more to hire you for a month, with processing tax, legal and Social Security paperwork, than they would pay you in a month and BESIDES this will be the last time off you'll have until you're eligible for vacation time! (You can tell I've done this before)
