Coincidences and silver linings

My wife is a mid-level manager at a big company. Tuesday, I was checking with her. I was hoping she could take off work a couple hours early on Friday so we could get an early start on a weekend trip.

"No, I can't. A couple of bigwigs (one of whom is a perfect example of the Peter Principle in action) are coming down from corporate on Friday, I have to be here".

Bummer.

Then on Wednesday she lamented "corporate has enacted a spending freeze, nobody can buy anything, no conferences, no food, no travel without major approval". Budgets are tight already, this doesn't help.

This morning she called. When the news that the spending freeze would deep-six the visit of the bigwigs, a cascade of cheers were heard from the cubicles. "I can take off early Friday after all, their trip has been cancelled due to the spending freeze."

Thus, the universe provides :)
