I found out today I look intimidating!
Well, I've always kinda known it-- I'm 6'4", 235 lb, and have shaggy hair and a bushy beard (not the kind of image you think of when "computer geek" is mentioned. Still, I love nothing better than to kick back with a good sci-fi novel, or sit with my cat on my lap, or do other non biker-rampage stuff!).

About 3 weeks ago I helped network a bunch of computers at an auto repair shop-- no biggie. The place was full of redneck good ol' boy Texas car mechanics, and I thought nothing of working there for the afternoon.

This afternoon, the guy I was working with that day told me the pack o' bruisers were talking about me, about how intimidating-looking I had seemed to them while there! (And they didn't even see me in my black biker jacket and knit cap, and my trusty belt knife!)

In the back of my head I know how I look, but my personality just doesn't fit my looks, so I forget it. In the end, it's hilarious to think of me having freaked a room full of people like that!

I love it...

1. Get used to it, I have the same problem.....
except that I'm a mere 5'8" and 230. Oh, and I practiced Tai Chi for about 15 years so I'm told I can be kind of scary just by looking thoughtful. The worst part is when you have a bad morning and you notice that grown men are jumping out of your way and apologizing.

I'm trying to tone my presence down a bit. Of course it's helpful if you ever go to jail. The weird thing is my self image is still a skinny 15 year old kid; strange.

4. Maybe it's in my blood
my late brother was a prison guard at the state pen in Indianapolis for a few years (long ago)-- I guess I took after him in more than a few ways!

7. Here is a qualifying question for newcomers to working
in prisons......

How many CO's (correction officers) does it take to throw an inmate down the steps?

5. Not fair...A nurse in a jail has SERIOUS POWER.......
nobody who's incarcerated and even halfway sane pisses off the medical staff. People in jail see what happens when medicines are delayed for even a day. It's not pretty.

Lady you were far scarier than the biggest guard and you knew it.

8. That never crosses my mind.
I would never, ever delay healthcare as a power play. I take their health needs serious. Thats why I like prison nursing, it is community based and that is my speciality.

It's the behaviors and manipulations that I stay on top of....

10. A Nurse Has Awesome Power
In Clinicals once, I had a Hispanic patient thrown off a bridge onto the Interstate where he got run over by a car.

He questioned my motives, but I was lucky enough to have my "pueta" Instructor leaning gainst the wall.

"I'm either going to help you with your bath or she's going to give you one; your choice."

Surprisingly, no one had another problem with the guy afterwards and I was embarrassed to tell what I did...threaten a guy with a big, fat hairy Nurse....

3. I get that a lot too...
It's a double edge sword really because I'm really a huge milquetoast but it does come in handy on occasions.

11. I've found out that
even if you're not particularly big (I'm about 6'0'', around the average size here) nor full of muscles (I'm slim), all it takes to intimidate people is to be consequent in what you say and do, and have an evil stare ready for use in case someone tries to be clever. I know, I have it myself, even if I'm the opposite of a violent person. It's not difficult at all. Heh heh ;)

12. maybe they watched that show "date patrol"...
...because the last episode featured a guy who always dressed in biker motif, had a great big voice and an aggressive stance. He couldn't figure out why women he liked weren't attracted to him, and the specialists on the show showed him how he intimidated women. Scariest thing she ever saw, one said. They taught him how to modulate his voice, how to engage through body language, how to dress in a softer style, etc. etc.

and I'm one of the most laid-back dudes on the planet. But I've been told that I look like a hard guy, a bad-ass, whatever.

So I got that workin' for me. :toast:

15. I found out a few years ago.
My daughter's friends were intimidated by me when they were teens.
I'm 6'3"/ 230 lbs. Our house was the usual hangout for them. I liked them then and still do now that they're 30-somethings. I was always cordial (I thought) and would stop in and chat with them for a few minutes before clearing out and leaving them to their own devices.
Now I find out that the boys thought I was a big scarey guy. Go figure.
