What do you think of PETa
Not People Eating Taste Animals but the other one...

There headquarters are near my house and some of the stuff they do here is crazy. I was wondering what people thought about the group and their ideas...

Can't we go a week without an "I hate Peta" thread?

I'll spare you the time. Here are the comments that will come up:

"Peta is made up of kooks"
"Only Peta I know is People Eating Tasty Animals"
"Mmm, I love pork chops (hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage...etc.)
"Wackjobs"
"Im sorry that they are considered the left"
"I hate extremists"
"Peta wants to take your dogs and cats away"
"Peta supports terror"
"Peta is America's Al Qaeda"
"Peta wants to set all animals free in the streets"
"Peta kills animals"
"How do we know plants don't feel pain"
"Plants feel pain Dammit!"
"I get my meat from organic farmers"
"They can rot in hell, they'll never take my meat"
"They think animals are better than people"
"They want to take away all your pets"

And so on and so forth, again and again and again one after another until you just wish Flanders was dead.

5. Riiight...
There are wackos in every organization. PETA is mostly good. They really only want what their name states - the ethical treatment of animals. Sure, there are PETA members who go too far, just like there are Greenpeace activists who go too far. But the organizations themselves are to be commended.

9. Sorry I don't spend enough time in DU to see all the PETA posts
It was just on my mind because they attacked some people at the Circus yesterday... I agree with somethings they do but we see too many of the wackos here...

12. Why
even bother to click on this thread? I've been here over a year and don't remember seeing this question before. Like the original poster, I'm curious about other DU'ers thoughts on the subject.

7. They have some good points,
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 09:03 PM by elperromagico
but the way they often choose to make those points winds up pushing a lot of people away.

If their goal is to be activist/provocative, they succeed. If their goal is to change people's minds or at least get them thinking in a different way, I fear they fail frequently. Whatever good they do, it's the crazy shit that some of their members do that makes the papers.

8. Well said.
My mom has her faults, (some of which include ex Republican, ex racist, ex gay, etc) but I've really brought her around the last few years.

But she ALWAYS had a soft heart for strays. My brother and I always knew that we could bring them home and she could never say no. All of our family pets were originally strays.

I about swallowed my tongue recently when she told me she'd joined PETA! She's gone hardcore! But it's good to see her at least taking a stand on something.

10. You just hit the nail on the head...
The media always chooses to cover the freakiest PETA/Greenpeace/Feminist members, clearly to shine a bad light on them. The real hard-working guys and gals who do noble work for the protection of animals and the Earth and women go completely unnoticed. I hope the Left can wake up and see this and refuse to be manipulated by the MSM.

11. You're completely right about that
A lot of what PETA actually asks people to do isn't that crazy, like using humane traps instead of glue to catch rodents, asking Mickey D's to kill chickens more humanely, etc. Plus, they help spay and neuter pets of people who can't afford to do it themselves. Yeah, some of their tactics are a little crazy, but they've done lots of good over the years and in some cases made really tangible differences for animals. I agree that the people in the trenches are the ones who make it work, and they never get the attention. One of the easiest ways to discredit any organization is to focus on its most extreme members.

14. They're kinda like a dentist who fills your cavity by slamming your face
with 600 pounds of liquified silver,

but they do a lot of good as well. For the most part, I support what they do and think are a great organization. But they have their radical idiots, like ACT-UP and a handful of other activist organizations.

Overall, though, I support PETA.

15. Anyone who says that PETA doesn't want to take my right to eat meat away..
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 11:13 PM by SmileyBoy
...is just denying it to themselves.

Seriously, if you have actually READ the mission statement from them, you'll see very clearly that they want to make it so that humans won't be allowed to eat any more meat at all in the future.

And that's really something that I can't go with.
