Poll question: So what do you call your Significant Other?
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 11:25 AM by Modem Butterfly
My partner and I aren't married, so we don't refer to each other as husband and wife except in private. We've been together 10 years so calling him a boyfriend seems kind of wrong, and since we're straight, calling him my partner sometimes engenders confusion that we're in business together. Of course, some folks assume I'm a lesbian, which doesn't bother me at all. I usually refer to him as my partner or "significant other". My mother calls him my "ummer" as in "This is my daughter, Modem, and this is my daughter's um...er..."

What do you call your significant other?

nice smelling perfume on it. Hey, at least it feels like I'm getting a hug that way. I wish I lived in a state where prostitution was legal. I'd shock some prostitute by paying her to hold me for 15 minutes. Haha.

11. My best Friend
Happily married for more than 30 years to my best friend. We don't need a covenant marriage or we don't need to make it illegal for gays to get married to sustain our marriage. We're just two wacky liberals who love one another.

And just why do conservatives need to amend the constitution to ban gays from marrying? BECAUSE THE BAN ISN'T IN THERE NOW.

16. CONGRATS to both of you Rowdy
31 years on April 6th for us. I introduce my wife to people who don't know her as my first wife (which she is). It sometimes leads to strange reactions, like, what are you still doing with her? How do you like the feistiness of the state's dems? Ole Haley isn't getting a blank check.

28. It just chaps Haley's ass that Mike Moore get to use that $20 million
and I love it! I'll be making one of my RARE political donations to Speaker McCoy come the next election cycle. I appreciate him stopping Big Daddy and Little Orphan Amy from steam-rolling the whole state.

30. Congratulations, Rowdy!
16 years is very impressive. My lover and I lasted a little over 5 years before he had the nerve to die on me. Damn, I miss and still love him.

I always refered to him as my husband, or my S.M.T. (for Sour Mean Thing).

I'll bet there's a funny story behind S.M.T. Michael is my partner, my love, my best friend and my better half (he's far more patient and far less hotheaded than me). He couldn't get rid of me if he wanted to....

18. When I was married, I referred to her as "Chris."
I eschewed using any possessive pronoun. "My wife" sounds a lot like "my car." It just felt wrong to encapsulate the identification of another human being in that way. I felt it was more appropriate to introduce her as herself - leaving the relationship as secondary.

(But what do I know? Since the marriage is no longer, I sure can't claim expertise.)

20. Depends on the audience
To strangers I'll never see again "My husband" (it's just easier). Plus I sometimes wear a wedding ring when I travel because I often interview older women about sensitive health and personal subjects, and they tend to be more comfortable talking to you if they think you're married.

To most people: My significant other

To stuffy business colleagues, older folks, or those who might be weird about things (especially in business situatiions): My fiance

To my friends: Ralph or My Ralph

39. I'm in the same boat as you
"Boyfriend" sounds pretty silly when you're 44 years old. We have no desire to marry but we have a committed relationship - we just don't see the need for church and/or state to be involved. So it varies - I call him my hubby for brevity's sake most of the time, or my sweetie-pie. When I'm feeling especially feisty, I will introduce him as "the man I sleep with outside of wedlock" which tends to generate raised eyebrows. Or "my main squeeze" (which leaves them wondering just how many lesser squeezes I have).

Luckily for us, we're pretty unsociable and so don't tend to be around people we don't know.
