I anonymously purchased a star for a DUer, who I now have on ignore.

I regrettably have not been able to pony up for membership this last year ... I am barely surviving ... making 40 % of my previous pay, and after 7 months of difficult unemployment ... I really hate this GOP idiocy: their vision is so phony and selfish ...

Plus, if you visit these conservative websites - they make it a point to compete for all those free stars we have contests for in hopes that one of them will win the star. Why should we be entertainment & fodder for these idiots?

I think it's great to donate stars, I did another one this fundraiser. But the contests are just fodder for conservative websites. Every once in awhile you'll see someone who doesn't have a star and you know they can't afford to make donations - and you just donate because you can.

7. If you give a donation to DU, you get a gold star.

You can give a donation to DU and designate who you want the star to go to. So even though I already have a star, I can go give a donation to DU and designate who it goes to.

You shoulda said yes! LOL!

you will notice a star. It means they are a donor to DU and get some special privileges, such as access to the certain forums, use of the "search" function, polls, etc....

that come from having a star such as being able to post polls and being able to join DU groups.

I've donated stars to people just so they could join certain Groups I like...

Not after the star, - before. I gave him the star months later. Not because he was any less of an ass, but because he has every right to his opinions, and continued discourse on DU would either enlighten him or drive him elsewhere.

I do a search of their posts and make a judgment call on whether they're suitable. Those who I've given stars to haven't been trolls to my knowledge. But there's no 100% way to be sure.

I purchased stars for others in the past whether that person agreed with me or disagreed me, this did not matter. My feeling was all money I donated went to DU. I guess I would rather give for others who enjoy DU. Most people get ticked with me probably, but that is okay. If someone needs help I'm willing to donate. The only thing I hope is that people are honest and not just being cheap.
