I received a random act of kindness today.

Today I was tired, and isolated from coffee. I let out a HUGE yawn, and was 'caught' by a stranger. She laughed at me...a little. I mock threatened her, that if she wasn't careful, I might just mug her for that big coffee she was holding. She laughed on moved on. A pleasant enough interaction with a stranger.

A few minutes later she came back and handed me a grande coffee. I was shocked. She had gone down the street to buy it for. I tried to pay her for it, but she refused my money. I of course thanked her for it, and she wished me a good day. She had already guaranteed that outcome.

are rare unfortunately. Years ago I used to stop and change tires for people if it looked like they were having trouble. Now, I'm afraid to stop. Too many instances of good samaritans being robbed.

Yesterday afternoon I doing the apartment hunting thing with my toddler. We were waiting outside a place in the cold and nasty wind, when an old woman from a couple doors down invites us into her home to warm up. During the 10 minutes or so we were there, she gave my daughter a cookie, let her have a balloon from an old Valentine's Day bouqet, and let her play with the cat. I was and still am moved by this incredibly kind gesture. A total stranger welcoming us into her home...who does that these days?

Can anybody say if things like this are more common in Europe? I'm asking 'cause these people were clearly 1st generation immigrants. (She was speaking almost exclusively Italian to her husband.) In my experience, most North Americans would be too paranoid to show such remarkable hospitality.
