LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Schwarzenegger Faces a Cash-Short Future

Isn't it ironic? Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger states that he will stick to his no-tax plan and will ask President Bush for help (Oct. 9). Bush has responded that he will do everything he can to help California. When Gov. Gray Davis asked Bush for help during the energy crisis, the president refused his request. Proves again that the White House cares about helping only those who will help advance the Bush agenda.

Ronny K. Marshall

West Hollywood

There are some other great ones too!!

Tootin' my own horn!! :kick::kick:kick:

7. Heartiest congratulations
My grandmother (3rdGenDem) was quite a letter writer herself. The Saginaw News has always limited letters to one per person per month and Gram would be right there every 31st or 32nd day, blasting Republicans in general and Richard Nixon in particular. She'd HATED Nixon since the Helen Gahegan Douglas pinko smear (1946?) and never hesitated to literarily pop him one between his beady little eyes.
I still have her letters upstairs in the library. They're classics -- every darned one of them.
John
Congratulations again.

10. I'm sure the Times is scared!
NOT!!!

If the Times really wanted to take Arnold down with the sex stories, they would have released the stories about a month ago.

But try and use LOGIC on a freeper.

16. Oh my god!
That is so funny. I'm thinking about putting my "Liberal" bumper sticker on my car. I got it from Betty Bowers' website. But I don't know if it will hold up well. I'm not afraid of anyone ripping it off, I just don't want it to look like crap in a few months.

Honestly, I don't know where Bushy will get the money to help Arnie. The purpose of the Bush agenda is to starve government.

Can't wait for Arnie to roll out his budget plan! He'll wish he was back in a Terminator movie.

23. Ronny, here's a letter from WeHo's Mayor Prang to WH employees
that you may be interested in.

To all employees:

I understand that a number of questions and concerns have been raised in response to my comments in the Beverly Press regarding the election and its potential impact on the City of West Hollywood. I am writing as I want to communicate with you personally about those comments and to offer some additional information and reassurances about that interview.

I was responding to a specific question about my reaction to the recall and the election of Arnold Schwartzenegger and I offered and a candid evaluation based on the public pronouncements statements made by the candidate and Governor-elect Schwartzenegger.

Governor-elect Schwartzenegger has stated throughout his campaign and in his first comments as Governor-elect, that his first official act as Governor will be to cut local government funding by $4 billion - the Vehicle License Fee (VLF). If he is successful, West Hollywood stands to lose a minimum of about $1.5 million to a maximum of $2.5 million from our $40 million annual revenue stream.

This dilemma is compounded by the method in which the state budget was balanced. In that scheme, $4 million of our sales tax revenue is now uncertain under the "triple-flip-flop" strategy that was used to balance the budget. The California budget deficit may be as high as $20 billion, again placing our local financial status in jeopardy.

The City Council will consider a variety of strategies to address many potential scenarios. We do not yet know how bad the situation may become or if the Governor-elect's plan will be implemented. If the City is forced to cut several million from it's budget, there will be a significant impact on programs, services, and strategic programs. Depending on how bad the budget situation may become, even more serious decisions may need to be considered, including reduction of personnel.

As a public employee facing the exact same circumstance in my own job, please be assured that I recognize that this is a terrible and absolutely last resort option. As Mayor, I will advocate deep cuts before I support laying off employees. Keeping our employees on the job is a top priority.

My comments in the press were not intended to be an alarm to anyone, but merely a response to a specific question from the reporter. They were intended to serve as a candid assessment of the gravity of the fiscal situation we face in West Hollywood and California. I feel obliged to advise the public, and you, of the seriousness of the current fiscal situation. I have grave concerns about the risks I think are inherent in the Governor-elect's proposal to slash local government funding without replenishing it through other means.

Please know that I will do everything in my power to preserve city jobs and services during this economic crisis.

Thank you all for your hard work for our community. Despite the current challenges we face, I remain proud of our organization and know that it's the finest municipal government with the best employees in California.

Mayor Jeff Prang
