I'm gonna share this now before it becomes timely
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I was a teenager when the Pope died.

Being silly teenagers, we made up a little song about the recently-departed Paul VI, sung to the tune of High Hopes:

We've got a dead Pope
He's a dead Pope
He's as cold as a stone,
he's a dead Pope,

we've got a vacant papacy
died of leprosy
what a silly old dope!
Whoops there goes another dead... whooops there goes another dead..
whoops there goes another dead pope.

Of course, it got even funnier when the John Paul I died a month later.

I'm not trying to cause any harm or pain or insult anyone - just noting a silly little ditty we used to sing as teenagers.

3. Which reminds me....
When I was in the fourth grade the Pope (current one) was shot. It was after that that he got his pope-mobile.

Well, my best friend was Linda and her family was Catholic. She came to school just spewing hate about the guy who shot the pope. I went home, told my mom about how angry Linda was and my mom said "Doesn't the Bible say something about praying for your enemies?" My mom wasn't a big Bible scholar (we never went to church) but she was right, so I thought I'd be helpful (damn I was stupid) and go to school and tell Linda she might want to pray for the man who'd shot the pope.

You'd think I told her to start worshipping Satan. She told HER mom, who flipped out, called MY mom and bitched her out on the phone.

That was the last time I EVER suggested to anyone who they should pray for, period. My mother agreed it was maybe not a good idea to suggest that, even though Jesus said it.

Our friendship was never the same. All over the pope.

(Um, I'm 34, how the hell old ARE you, anyway? I think I've asked you this before, but.....you were in college when that happened???)

;-)

Hey I was in fifth grade when Reagan was shot. Hang on, was that the same year the pope got shot? Maybe I was in the fifth grade, not fourth.

13. N o Reagan was shot in the early 80s - I was in grad school at the time
I remember when I was a chaperone taking my son's second grade class to the Reagan library and his teacher mentioned that she had been in second grade when he was shot. Most of the moms in the room felt really old after hearing that.

15. I was in HS and scived off the AM classes. Said I was in church due to
the Pope being shot. I went in for afternoon classes and you had to go to the office before going to class if you'd been late. My "excuse" helped me to avoid getting zeros for the morning classes I had missed.

The principal was working himself up to a lecture when his secretary told him to back down..she herself looked embarrassed that he was going to fuss on me for "praying for the Pope's recovery"...afterall, the Pope had been shot. The look on his face was priceless. He wanted so badly to scold me...and couldn't. I detested the man anyway and thoroughly enjoyed his discomfiture.

So off I went to class.

There was a party the night before and I needed the sleep....which is the real reason I was late.

I'm a heathen...always have been.

17. okay here's a slightly blasphemous story about
the death of popes. When a female relative of mine went to college in New York in the late 70s, her sexual activities seemed to coincide with the death of two popes, I forget the exact, JPII maybe and the one preceding him. Anyway, when she and her boyfriend wanted to be "intimate," so to speak, they would say, "Want to kill a pope." It's terrible I know, but.

For the record I was raised Catholic, but this story is sort of infamous in my family. No offense intended.
