and free software, get the one that the most people you know have. I have the PC. I think I have met 4 Mac users in my entire life.

40. You must not get out much...
I use a Mac and a PC at work, and I have a Mac at home. I love using the Macs and hate using the PC piece of crap.

I know a lot of Mac users -- they are all diehards and would never think of switching to a PC.

13. It's about time Macs are differentiated from mere "computers"
S'funny, I've got both a Mac and PC and I often find myself referring to the PC as the "computer" and I just call my Mac a Mac.

The word "computer" to me brings up the thought of the many headaches I get trying to irradicate the daily viruses I get on the thing, constantly having to reinstall stuff, losing all my data when the harddrive crashes, etc... Whereas when I think "Mac" I think of the device that allows me to get information at my fingertips, get my work done in a timely manner, create music, make videos, play games, etc...

20. The mac is a toy. The ipod is an environmental joke.
And I'd have to spend $3500 on a Mac for what I could spend $1500 on a PC for (video capture and restoration)

And I've made enough posts on the environmental atrocity known as the ipod... let's just say that a certain so-called environmentalist on the director's board has lost my respect. Apparently, as a politician, it's paying lipservice to righteousness. As a company exec, it's about the cheapest way to make the biggest profit. Universal law, that.

23. I'll bite. What makes iPod environmentally worse than other MP3 players?
I know computers in general are a problem, especially disposal of old ones, etc. Why would an iPod be worse than MP3 players from other makers? Or other PCs or transistor radios or old cars or cheeseburgers?

25. I wondered the same thing...
... so I searched for HT's posts on the evil iPod and found a site he cited here:
http://www.computertakeback.com/

Where I certainly agree that huge corporations need to address the recycling problems inherent with consumer electronics, I doubt that Apple is that much worse than anybody else in the industry. It seems that the reason Apple is targeted by this group is because they were chosen in a poll for the supporters of the effort.
http://www.computertakeback.com/campaignpoll.cfm

Apparently the computer take back site already successfully persuaded Dell to change their ways and they are now focusing on their next target, which is Apple. Good for them.

However, I couldn't find anywhere on the site where it speciffically said the iPod itself was any worse or better than other MP3 players, though. But I haven't spent a lot of time checking out the site yet so...

On the one hand, I'm surprised that they aren't going after a larger player in the computer industry, like say, IBM, which, according to the "list of grievances" they cite for a half dozen or so companies, "has a long history of causing major environmental pollution as well as serious occupational health problems for its employees throughout the U.S. and around the world." Why target a relatively small company like Apple?

On the other hand, maybe targeting them is better. Everybody already knows that when Apple designs something, the rest of the industry bends over backwards to copy it.
I agree that Apple should step up to the plate and lead the industry in the recycling of their products and innovate with enviro-friendly design, much like they lead the industry in user-friendly design. If it did so, perhaps they could change the industry in that way too.

Of course, these comments are based on a very short time spent researching the "environmental joke" the iPod apparently is. As I am a staunch Apple supporter, this news bothers me and I'll be digging much deeper to see for myself how bad Apple indeed is.

--

As for the battery thing, yeah, Apple's approach isn't something that I really like but, when the battery of my 5GB iPod conked out, I simply bought another one online, which came with simple instructions and replaced it. It still is working like a charm.

27. Another thrilling and brilliant anti-Apple post by Hypno Toad
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 09:01 PM by Awsi Dooger
Let's see, I bought Apple stock at $13+ in the mid-'90s and sold it at $147. Eventually it went to $157.

Then after a split and a dive in price, like all techno stocks, I re-upped again at $13+ a couple of years ago, and I welcome anyone to check out where it is now. This is the simplest handicapping I've ever done in my life, predicting that Steve Jobs and Co. will come up with superior ideas and products to the blinders-on PC simpletons.

I consultant Nevada sportsbooks and have to slum into their world several times per week, dealing with PC crap and its bloated code. It's beyond laughable.

Yeah, let's use video to demonstrate how superior PCs are to Macs. Hey Hypno, the Monty Python thread was a few days ago.

To demonstrate how clueless PC users can be, the other day I contacted my Cox Cable technical support after having some trouble with my cable modem. I told the tech woman immediately I used a Mac. After she took my info and put me on hold, she came back and asked what version of Windows I used. I politely repeated I use a Macintosh. Then she put me on hold and came back with this genius; "Are you on DOS?" At this point I became a little edgy and told her it was the third time I said I'm on a Mac. Her response -- "Do you use Windows '95? Or '98?" I'm dead serious. This was a computer technical help woman who had no clue Macs use a different OS. You can search the entire Mac-using universe and not find anyone that igno.

21. Yawn!
I've been encountering computer geek macho for nearly twenty years.

"How can anything that user-friendly be any good?"

Yeah, yeah. It all reminds me of translator geek macho, in which some translators put down other translators for using Japanese-English dictionaries instead of Japanese-Japanese dictionaries. As if the client cares.

Some of us actually want to get our work done. By any means necessary. That's all that matters. :-)

24. Yeah, I figure...
I can get the work done in 3/4 or less of the time on a Mac when you account for all the care and feeding the PC requires.

What do I do? Some spreadsheet stuff, the usual online stuff, and vast amounts of text editing and layout. WordPerfect is my workhorse.

Everything I do with WordPerfect Office seems to be doable with iWork and Appleworks. With much less hassle.

And Opera, Mozilla, and Eudora are available for the Mac. That leaves precious little but games and fun utilities like WeatherPulse for the PC.

They can argue forever about which is "better" but best for me is what gets the work done.

It's kinda like the old Ford-Chevy debates. Whatever gets you to there is fine.

37. Not only that, but...
...I've got a thing or two to say about this whole "PCs are cheaper". Well, that depends how you look at it. Check out Alienware ALX desktops, you can configure those suckers up to 8 or 9 grand or something. And in general, you can easily blow 5 grand on a PC. It's just that what you'll get will outperform any Mac out there.
