Poll question: When You Retire, What State Will You Retire To?

When you're old, wrinkled and grey (or moreso, for some DUers) where are you gonna lay down camp to spend the rest of your days?

2. Canada is my second choice but I don't think I'd qualify

if I wait until I 'retire'. Actually I'm on disability and I'd be in Canada right now if it weren't for the fact that my hubby works for the state. Can't really live in Canada a work for the state of WI.

19. Yeah but it's expensive

and so crowded with tourists that you can't do anything without 50 million other people joining you. The roads aren't built to support that many people either so you poke along in traffic a lot. And it's too damn hot in the summer. I lived there for 3 years and I loved it but after awhile all that stuff I just mentioned got to me. I moved nearby and it's much nicer except for all the Wingnuts. I'd try renting a house there in the summer before you retire there. But you're right, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth. :-)

My husband will have to be near water. I like a place that has seasons. If I don't have to worry about finding work, there's nothing to keep me from leaving the country, unless we ever have kids, grandkids (who knows if I can even get pregnant again, so far no luck, but I digress.) Cliff loved the south of France when he was there. I remember him saying something about wanting to retire there once.

The best city in the world, and with the most friendly people.
Either there, or right where I'm at now, which is Bøler, a suburb to Oslo, Norway, just a few minutes with the metro from the centre of a city of 500,000 people, and yet with a fantastic lake, a huge forest and clean air right outside my window.

That said, I'd probably go for Amsterdam, what with the bicycles, the pot and all that. ;)

Please. Look at the state of things. I've got a couple of decades to sock away money and am currently doing so, but God knows what's going to happen to Social Security, Medicare, etc., in the meantime. I've been hearing literally for the last 20 years that I can't expect Social Security.

One thing I know for sure, though: I will NEVER be a Wal-Mart greeter to pay the bills! Nothing could make me sink that low. :-)

37. Colorado - Winter Park....

9,000 feet, not a big company concession stand to the degree that Vail, etc are, affordable (last time I looked, anyway), frequent trains running to Denver. I really like the altitude, for some reason I fell much healthier at altitude. Also, a local park has some of the world's best water, out of a pump.

On the other hand, if we need to split the US - you could do a lot worse than Nanaimo, British Columbia - one of the prettiest towns in the country.
