Poll question: Will you forgive artists who performed at the Bush II Inaugural?

I ask this because right now I'm listening to LeAnn Rimes, a woman with a beautiful voice and frequently questionable choice of material AND political ideology.

None of the songs on this CD are about George W. Bush.

So I'm listening.

If she DID a song about Bush, I'd throw it out the window like a Frisbee from hell.

Mandy Moore performed at the 2001 inauguration, and everybody thereafter assumed she was Republican. That is, until last summer when her publicist sternly denied that Moore was Republican. This picture from October should put any doubts to rest:

10. I have performed with one of the singers who sang at the inaugural...

and I was a bit surprised to see her there.... not completely surprised, but surprised. Absolutely would never buy any of her recordings after this, not that I had much of an interest in the first place.

I haven't followed a lot of the soap opera details of LeAnn's life. I like her simply because I grew up in a home with non-stop "traditional" country music (Buck Owens, Chet Atkins, Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Patsy Cline) and LeAnn has the ability, when she wants to use it, to tap into that.

The battle for control of her career was pretty ugly.

I wouldn't buy any more 3 Doors Down CDs (new one is bad anyway.) But I don't think Hilary Duff really pays much attention to politics - I think she played for the publicity (I don't expect to buy any future CDs from her anyway.)

I bought the new LeAnn Rimes CD, and while it's not a masterpiece, it's a nice comeback. I can ignore regular disagreement if the songs aren't political.

I have never seen anyone I really like perform for or profess an afinity with neocons. If I found out someone I like did, I would have no problem with not liking them anymore. I don't want to support neocon bullshit in forms that are purely optional

15. Honestly, I don't care. It's how artists handle their politics

that matters to me. I'm no real fan of country music, but I like Leann Rimes. As far as country musicians go, you just have to accept the fact that 95% are conservative. It's how they handle it. Leann RImes is one thing. Charlie Daniels is another, even though I have no beef with him either. Or Toby Keith. It's the hypocrisy that gets me. Conservatives gripe about liberal artists involving themselves in politics, but when conservatives do it, it's cool. If Linda Rondstat has dedicated her song to Ann Coulter, instead of Michael Moore, she'd have never been booted from the Aladdin hotel.

16. I don't tend to mind

I like a few artists who have politics I'm not sure of or have indicated they might be conservative, mostly holdovers from a few years back when I listened to modern country music quite a bit. If they seem conservative in their music but aren't political I don't much mind. (I'm personally conservative in several ways myself; I make a distinction between being politically liberal and being personally liberal.) If they are blatantly politically conservative or FReeperish in their music or public persona I'd probably still try to get a hold of their music if I really wanted to hear it... I'd just try to figure out a way to get it without giving them any money!

19. This is too damn much work

If an artist makes a big deal out of being a winger, then I tend not to like them, automatically. But in most cases, I really don't care. Even most of the conservative artists tend to not be all that political. Performing artists of any kind are just not politics wonks the way we are here.

A lot of times, too, our perceptions of the artist(s) are just incorrect, like the "issue" over Mandy Moore's support of Bush ... which turned out not to be the case. As for the clebs who are conservative, most of them will probably become liberal soon after the Boy-King is deposed. People live and learn.

It's too much work to keep a list of people I "hate", and it's too much work to go around evaluating everybody by whether they're liberal or conservative. Plus my own sense of liberalism bristles at that kind of attitude. Nothing good can come of it, and it can get to you and seriously poison your outlook on life. Fundamentalists have a similar problem, looking on people as being Saved or Lost.

If a performer stands on a stage and says "Thank GOD George W. Bush is our president," it's not too much work for me at all. I can pretty much tune them out on a subconscious "auto pilot" level from that point forward.

I don't care for Toby Keith primarily because I think he sucks. I never give his politics a thought, I just think he really, really sucks. He's part wimp and part thug, if such a thing is possible. In his case, I believe it is.

I like Sara Evans and Martina McBride and they are BOTH very, very tight with Hannity and have performed at many of his public functions. When I listen to them I listen to their music and don't think about Hannity, but when I see photos like this:



...I usually take a mini-vacation from Sara's music.

That picture is a sad sight to see. Sad about Sara Evans; I had heard before that she was a Re:puke: but had no clue she was tight with Hannity. Guess she's further proof that beauty's only skin deep. I have liked a couple of her songs, though; but she's never been one of my favorites.

Toby Keith is a very talented musician who's completely a-wastin' it. The "I'm A Ford Truck Main" gig done made the deal it for me. The Thug+Wimp equation sounds about right. He's also got himself the smoothest hands of any tough-guy blue-collar flag-wavin' son of an A-Rabb ass-kicker I ever did see. Maybe he owns stock in the Corn Huskers' Hand Lotion company.

I like some of Sara Evans' music, an' she sure is purty an' all, but I couldn't tell her politics from what I heard. The persona she uses, though, is that she's one of them "honkey tonk angels", which I understand ain't exactly a God-fearin' approach. (Are ya'll listenin', Martina, honey?).

On the other hand, Ms. Evans' and Ms. McBride's political acumen is probably just as paltry as that of most people with busy careers that require no political thought. Maybe one or both o' them fillies is gettin' some sugar from that old Sean Hannity.

Has she ever said she supported Bush or Republicans? I believe she's for gay rights (then again, so are alot of 'moderete' Republicans).

Jojo said in an interview that she's not for bush's policies, so i can guess I can 'forgive' her too (not that it matters. I rarely listen to pop music).

...I've never purchased anything by any singer or musician that is a supporter of the Republican party, or it's scorched earth policies.

Perhaps my "gut instincts" are a bit better than bush's.
