I am going to rant!
I am sick and tired of people bashing those of us who live in mobile homes. In a thread in GD, someone posted that they live in a nice house in the South and not a double-wide like poor white trash. Excuse me!!! I live in a mobile home in the South. I have a nice car and a good job. My home is free of any mortgage, as I own it outright. I am a divorced woman whose children are married and I do not need a big home as it is just me and my dog. Most people who live in mobile homes are not ignorant red-neck white trash. There, I got that off my chest.

1. Good rant
I agree with your point and am glad that you said it.

I don't know what the intention of the original poster was; they may have meant no ill. But, as I have said before and as others have pointed out before as well, there are too many on here willing to casually bash or ridicule poor or "lower-class" people or the things that they think represent them if these people happen to be white, especially if they happen to be southern whites. I think poster should try to be more cautious and stop perpetuating this double standard. I'm a southernerner and if there's one thing I've learned it's that many of the people with some of the most backward or "low-class" mindsets are living in some of the biggest houses. To me, class as a distinction should be more about how one leads their life than about how much money they make.

3. Ignore the stupidity.
Some people actually believe another`s worth is determined by what they drive, where they live, what they own. It`s sheer stupidity of the shallow kind.

Give yourself a pat on the back for paying off your mortgage and gaining a little freedom.

4. Right ON, Sister Woman!
Some sensational crime happens in the South, and a DU thread won't go two responses without some ying-yang bringing in the helpful phrase "trailer trash." Then come the jibes about marrying cousins and going to NASCAR races.

HOWEVER, let the SAME crime happen in, say, Idaho--not a WORD.

It ain't where you live, it's how you live!

5. I have a friend who makes $50,000 a year and lives in one
He likes living on the road and out in the country. His RV is full of much expensive equipment, including a $3000 HDTV.

10. I am one who would LOVE to have an RV as my primary
residence. My uncle had one for years and upgraded to a fuil scale tour bus. I've yet to see the tour bus because he and his wife live part of the year in Washington state. They occasionally make it to Illinois.

I have wanted an RV since watching Trapper John MD back in the 70s. I work near a casino that allows big rigs to park in their lots. Also, Wal-Mart allows RVs to park in their lots.

11. Oh, me too, me too!
I've been gearing up for such a move for the last five years. Every time I see one parked in a parking lot, I amble over and see if anyone's home to ask if I can come take a looksee. I haunt the used RV websites (if you're willing to go used, and you don't need a 40' diesel pusher, you can get in relatively cheap!). I read Rand McNally Road Atlases like they were John Grisham's latest. I get every RVing book I can afford (need someone to empty your black water tank? I'm your guy!). I was even considering naming my yet-to-be-acquired RV "Titanic," in honor of Dr. Gates.

Soon... Very soon...

6. I grew up in the South
and I know many nice people who live in mobile homes.

I also know many 'trashy' people who live in nice brick homes.

7. I am in my early 30's.
I am educated, as are my group of friends. Many of them have decent jobs (myself excluded). Many of my friends are buying mobile homes. Why? Because they cost less, they can be upgraded (garden tubs, built-ins, etc) and they are movable. Most nowadays can be placed on a permanent foundation (even a basement). They are proud to be homeowners and to know that their mortgage will be paid off much quicker than regular homeowners.
When people hear about their choice of home, the first thing out of their mouths is "trailer trash". They too get upset about that phrase. Most of my friends have theirs situated on acres of land. Only one has his in a trailer court-and the court looks nicer than most apartment complexes.
It is a stereotype that gets old fast. People assume if you live in a trailer than you must be trash. Most of the people who make these comments have never been in a trailer themselves or they would know that the comments are untrue.

8. Nothing wrong with mobile homes!!!
It annoys me when people talk about 'trailer trash' too. My best friend growing up lived in a mobile home. She and her mom were both very hard-working, awesome people that treated me like family. I spent more time over there probably than in my "nice" suburban home (aka Dysfunctionville!!!).

9. I agree.

These sorts of economic stereotypes run counter to everything the progressive movement stands for. There's just no sense in dividing people up over trivial things like this.

12. Mobile homes seem to be a class symbol
We never lived in a mobile home growing up. When I was little, my mother said that it was because she was afraid of tornados and that mobile homes are easily damaged or destroyed by them. When I was older, she revealed that the reason was her own class predjudices. We were "middle class" people and such people don't live in mobile homes.
Instead we lived in a nice old 3 bedroom house whose backyard touched the outer walls of a factory, which it was owned by.

13. Tell that to my parents who live in a double wide and make $160,000
a year between them. Some people just prefer life in a mobile home.
