the film from idea to production and he had to use 4 million of his own money to get the film done and released. . a great film written and produced by a great actor. in fact i`ll watch the rest of it now...

I recall the hue and cry when this movie was released. In St Louis it was at one of the "art flick" theatres so it did not have as large an audience as it would have, had it been released to the chain theatres. The fundies did not like Duvall's potrayal of the minister.
When I watch the movie I see a guy who truly loves his faith but has many demons to fight, among them his proclivity toward violence as a means to solve problems. In other words he is a flawed human being.
