George Michael singing Bonnie Raitt's "I can't make you love me" KD Lang singing Neil Youngs "Helpless" Sheryl Crow singing Rod Stewarts "The first cut is the deepest"
Those are a few of my favorites.

3. Here are a few choice cuts..... |
|
Joe Cocker - "I Get by With a Little Help From My Friends"
Talking Heads - "Take Me to the River"
Stevie Ray Vaughn - "Little Wing"
Willie Nelson - "Midnight Rider" (recent release...good stuff!)
Dead Horse - "Rock Lobster" (obscure, but cool!)
Tori Amos - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
I like covers where the artist reinterprets the original in a unique way. If you can't bring your own vision to a song, why cover it?

Stevie Ray really brought it on that one.
While we're on Hendrix, I'd add Sting's version of "Little Wing" to the list as well. Nice reinterpretation.
Off of Hendrix for a moment, I'd also add Joss Stone's version of the White Stripe's "Fell In Love With a Boy" to the list.
Marilyn Manson - "Sweet Dreams"
Lovemongers - "Battle of Evermore"
Iron Maiden - "Cross-Eyed Mary"

7. This looks like the right time for a question |
|
Why are "remakes" called "covers"? I'm an old guy. I have noticed this terminology within the last few years. Whatever happened to just calling them "remakes"?

During the fifties music on radio was segregated. R&B (originally called "race" music) was not played on white stations. In order to cash in on the new adventurous music, white artists were used to "cover" songs made by black performers. Examples:
Theresa Brewer recorded "Tweedle Dee" (a little cleaned up from original) by LaVern Baker. Pat Boone did Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." Bobby Vinton decimated "Blue Velvet" by (IIRC) The Chords. and "Little Darlin'" by the Diamonds was originally recorded by The Gladiolas. Funny that we never hear about those black artists.

16. I like bonerama's version of war pigs |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 12:37 PM by neohippie
Bonerama is a trombone based band from New Orleans and they do a phat cover of war pigs.
There is this great band from Chicago called Mr. Blotto and every year at their homegrown music festival called "Blottopia" they close the last set by covering an entire album. I think last year they covered The Who's "Who's Next" album and it was tremendous.
You can download entire shows by Mr. Blotto and many other bands who allow copyright free recordings of their music to be posted online at the Live Music Archive.

18. FNM did a studio version of War Pigs. |
|
They stayed pretty true to it on the studio album. It was on "The Real Thing" along with "Epic".
