Favorite $10 (ie big) word?
Today, I have to go with nictitating. It's a membrane that reptiles, birds and Donald Rumsfeld (Wait! I already said "reptiles." Sorry!) have to protect their eyes. Apparently, nictitate just means blink. But is sounds ever so much more impresive.:D

Yours?

a village in Wales...longest name of such in the world. Have fun trying to pronounce it.

It means "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave."

edit: they got the spelling of "hazel" wrong.

4. sesquipedalianist
a person who uses extra long words
(sesqui- means 1 and a half; ped means foot; so the idea is that the words are a foot and a half long -- it's self-referential!)

6. Supercilious
adj 1: having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy; "some economists are disdainful of their colleagues in other social disciplines"; "haughty aristocrats"; "his lordly manners were offensive"; "walked with a prideful swagger"; "very sniffy about breaches of etiquette"; "his mother eyed my clothes with a supercilious air"; "shaggy supercilious camels"; "a more swaggering mood than usual"- W.L.Shirer 2: expressive of contempt; "curled his lip in a supercilious smile"; "spoke in a sneering jeering manner"; "makes many a sharp comparison but never a mean or snide one"

I could probably find someone to describe this was every day if I looked hard enough.

8. "scrofulous" comes to mind
It's an old-fashioned medical word for a condition with swollen throat glands and catarrh (another fun word). It has a secondary meaning of "corrupt and morally degenerate."
