I have the sinus infection from Hades *moaning* The pressure is so bad
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 04:21 PM by GreenPartyVoter
that even my teeth (and ears) hurt. Touching my cheekbones and eyebrows is agony. I have tried pseudoephedrine and aspririn. Not much help.

Is there anything out there, short of very small vacuum cleaners and car jacks that will restore a semblence of normalcy to all the sinus spaces in my head??

Editing to add that hubby and our oldest boy had this too this week, so I think it must be viral. Took them about 2 days to get past the excrutiating pressure bit. So I better start feeling more myself in the next 6 hours, or I will be ticked off.

I'll go try some steam and send hubby ut for some stronger sinus meds. A little nervous about the sinus wash, but I have heard other folks swear by it.

my eyes might be a little puffy. I sure don't look too hot right now. *l*

5. Vicks Vapo Rub
I cannot take pseudoephedrine because of my blood pressure and anxiety. Vapo rub doesn't have side effects or drug interactions.
If you have thick mucus blocking your sinuses, guifenesen can help with that too.

7. the actifed only has
25 mgm of Psuedofed. You can handle more than that. But if your eyes are swelling...go to urgent care or doc in a box. You need anti biotics

8. I post this all the time
but it is the only thing that has ever worked for me. You have to get the infection out and open out the sinuses. Rinse them out. Get a solution of salt, baking soda, and water and inhale it. It disgusting but just do it. Do that a few times a day for a week and it does work. (I recently saw a $30 packet that does the same thing)

As background, I struggled with sinus infections for years. For two or three months I was sick. I started rinsing with the salt water which is disgusting, I moved away from moldy house, and started taking the infections seriously. As soon as I get sick, I start on the salt water washes. I haven't had an infection for a few years. This is from a person who's had cat scans of their sinuses. I have small ones and prone to infections.

9. Do like cally said PLUS eat chicken broth with lots of chilies.
Chicken broth helps a LOT with cold/flu cand chilies (chillies?) help the circulation and are very good for the sinuses. That's how they do in India, and it works.

12. I am a veteran of this crap.
When things are horrible the doctor told me to do what he normally would never allow, which is to use the over the counter nosesprays - Afrin or the like. Spray it in. Wait a couple of minutes until it opens a little, then spray it in as far as you can get and sniff. You can't use those sprays for more than a couple of days without getting rebound problems but when the pain is bad they can open things up quickly. Do keep the Sudafed going (except not at nighttime if you want to sleep) and the hot steam and other stuff you have heard here. Also some ibuprofen for the pain will also help calm down the inflammatory stuff.

13. I had a six week sinus infection
It started just before the year-end holidays and lasted until I finally got my arse to the doctor.

She prescribed antibiotics -- and within two days, I was feeling better.

I'd recommend the same for you -- get to a doctor.

14. I agree with this too.
You probably need an antibiotic. I thought you were already on one but then I re-read it.

15. I can tell you what works for me.
I get in the shower and let the warm water run on the back of my neck. When I get used to it's warmth, I increase the temperature of the water and keep increasing the temperature ...after awhile all kinds of disgusting phlegm comes pouring out...
But Man..does it feel good!

16. o man, you gotta get antibiotic.
Two tears ago, at the beginning of spring, I had one and rode it out. Two months! Last year, when I got one at spring, and it is always preceded with t a common cold, I went two weeks, then went to the doc and got the penicillin. I was clear (as in the color or mucus) within 36 hours.

Take care of yourself, go see a doc.

18. you can take up to 60 mg sudafed in one dose, Do it
also, get either the non drying sudafed formula, or some Robitussin liquid or the new OTC tablet guafinasen ( active ingredient in Robitussin). Take it with the sudafed. The guafinasen thins the mucus, and this is key to getting the drainage out of there before it sets up a bad infection.

Warm moist packs help a great deal, hot tea, hot steam showers, chicken soup with lots of garlic, ginger and chiles as describes below are all helpful.

I have a thing called a Body Buddy, it is rice grains inside a knit tube with handles on the end. Microwave it, and drape it behind your neck, on your forehead, where ever it hurts; moist heat, wonderful.
