In honor of the Oscars, let's post about crappy movies that won Oscars!
It doesn't have to be for best picture, but any Oscar will do. I'll start with an example--last year, "Lost in Translation" won for best original screenplay, and if there was a more boring movie ever made, I've yet to see it!

I could go on and on and on, but I'll let you all chime in with some undeserving crap!:)

over Pulp Fiction. geeez. However, I disagree with Lost In Translation - fun movie in many ways - but, that debate seems to be had about every other week here.

16. God dammit, yes.
It's like they were afraid of the hordes of braces-wearing teenyboppers who would storm Academy Headquarters and shriek them to death if they didn't fellate that bloated turd of a movie.

Interesting bit of trivia: it's part of a three-way tie for Most Oscars Won By A Motion Picture (11), with Ben Hur and Return of the King.

25. True, but just because he doesn't win when he deserves to...
ie. Goodfellas or Raging Bull, doesn't mean that he should win when he doesn't deserve to (ie. Aviator, The Age of Innocence, etc.)

I have hated every one of his "Please give me an Oscar!" blatant attempts, namely The Aviator, Age of Innocence, and to a lesser degree Gangs of New York.

Why do artists feel the need to apologize for what they do best (in this case, violent, bloody, gritty gangster movies) just to get some validation from some organization.

Liked the overall concept of Gladiator, but when they made the Colosseum look like a non-stop Jerry Springer episode, that's when the film started to lose me.

But the film also featured Marcus Aurelius, one of Rome's better emperors and a decent philosopher. If I had to live in a fascist society, I'd want Marcus Aurelius as my chief executive.

If you do have to live in a fascist society - an intelligent, philosopher despot who actually thinks about the consequences of war and says things like: "How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it." is preferable to an inarticulate, war-mongering, self-important, buffoon.

Hair extensions, body paint, dismemberment, Mel's ego. Big hairy deal. Any of the four other nominated movies ought to have won. They'll stand up better over time, too.

By the way, why is there such adoration of graphically violent movies that don't stand up artistically? I understand why The Godfather is a masterpiece, but not some of these also-rans. And little gems of movies based on novels, such as Enchanted April, Room with a View, and Sense and Sensibility, will still be worth watching decades from now and ought to be honored accordingly.

72. No. I didn't like it either.
The disembowelment part at the end turned me off. Am I the only one who thinks Mel Gibson has a very unhealthy fixation with blood and gore? Kind of twisted.

75. I didn't like Braveheart either
A mixture of historical inaccuracy, Mel's ego and Mel's accent (which drifted from Irish to South African throughout the film) put me off.

67. "Forrest Gump" - A series of showy special effects
with a lightweight story wrapped around them. Not some inspiring story of the human spirit, as all the hype claimed.

Sorry to those who like it; I too liked it at one point. But I've grown to dislike it rather intensely, particularly compared to its competition in '94.

74. Ghost winning screenplay over Presumed Innocent
Forrest Gump has been mentioned many times. Lord of the Rings was pretty bad. Rocky winning over all the President's men (that was nothing short of ludricrous).

78. Shakespeare in Love
That has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
