1. Anyone else think there is no way anyone but Foxx can win best actor?
Foxx did the job so perfectly that could have been Ray Charles himself on the screen.

matches up to Foxx. Jamie Foxx was BRILLIANT!

71. Depp was amazing in Ed Wood...
But I don't think he had overcome his lightweight pretty-boy image enough at that time for the Academy to have taken him seriously. A shame, a really bad mistake.

34. The problem is that Ray was such an amazing story in real life -
that its' script just sort of wrote itself. Sometimes the Best Picture isn't about the best 'given' story but about what was done from scratch to come up with the best movie.

Not a ton of amazing movies though. At least in my opinon.

15. My picks and my reasons:

Million $$ Baby-Movie - 'caused it pissed off some Rwingers

Martin Scorsese -Director - he is due

Jamie Foxx-Actor - he deserves it

Jamie Foxx-Supporting - it would be cool for him to win both

Hilary Swank -Actor - I just simply like her

Natalie Portman -Supporting - I just like her too

Eternal Sunshine -Original Screenplay - 2 words: "Charlie" & "Kaufman"

The Motorcycle Diaries -Adapted Screenplay - 1 word: "Che"

The Sea Inside -Foreign - it would piss off the Rwingers (not that most would watch a foreign film)

Shrek 2- Animation - it is the only one I saw and the only one I wanted to see

Super Size Me -Documentary - my liberal "anti establishment" stance -McDonald's/Walmart all the same to me (notice that McDonald's are now inside Walmarts? What a great combination)

But I do agree, it did drag at times (Especially the scenes in which Huges keeps himself in that private screen room) I thought it was a good movie though. Glad Cate won best supporting actress.

64. No way "the Aviator" deserved best costumes
"Troy" and "a series of unfortunate events" were ten times as demanding and required far more creativity. The Aviator had photographic records to draw from.

I'd hate to see it get anything. Giving them awards only encourages the making of bad epics.

75. Not the costumer's fault
give credit where credit is due; look at the costumes and nothing else, and the costumes used in "Troy" required far more research and creativity (not to mention sheer effort)than those in "the Aviator". As an artist who has worked on a few "sucky" movies, I get sick of the failings of a director being placed on the shoulders of the cast or crew!

78. I think you've just described why so many people voted for *
They are incapable of objective thought; instead of looking at policy (or the skill involved in costuming), they vote for who they "just like" (a person or a film). They aren't thinking about the questions, they're reacting to a "feeling".

84. Actually, Costume Design is voted only by those who are in Costumes
Like most categories, only those professionals working in the field are allowed to vote.

All members can vote for Best Pic, but the categories are left to those who are working on these pics.

Colleen Atwood should have won for Limmeny Snicket, but I can live with Ms. Powell getting another Oscar.

88. I know-I have a lot of friends in the Academy
and most of them don't even bother watching all the films in their catagory; they, too, vote on what they "just like".It's nothing more than laziness ("if I'm not nominated, why do I care..").

I heard so many people gush about the Art Direction in Lemonny Snicket, and no one said a thing about it in "The Aviator". Sad.

111. Tim Burton's design team is hardcore, best around.
Shame he wasn't apart of that picture, only his creative team.

But it does show how much a director depends on his design staff to make a certain "style."

Rick Heinrichs is an amazing Production Designer, his imagination never seems to give up. Since he's not associated with Charlie and Chocolate Factory, I'm highly skeptical about how that film will look. The early trailers don't seem to highlight any interesting design other than filling the sound stage with colorful crap and ripping off the original.

There are very few people who can pull off a major change. You were put together with a certain complexion and certain hair color and eye color. And the God I don't believe in, for the most part, knew what he/she was doing. Change one element and everything looks off kilter.

I tried a minor change once--slight red cast. (And I do have some red in my hair) Looked like ca ca. Changed back... quickly.

Is that gutsier than the Academy usually is? From what DUers have said about that film, it sounds like a really interesting story so it's probably good that it won that award. "The Usual Suspects" won that one the year it was out, also an appropriate choice.

144. No, that's the gutsy category.....
Eternal...isn't mainstream enough to win Best Picture, for example.

Quentin Tarantino's Oscar is in that category (for "Pulp Fiction").

"Good Will Hunting"....

I think Sofia Coppola won that Oscar too (which she shouldn't have, most of "Lost in Translation" was silent).
