While Tony and I were at the shop earlier, a local State Trooper pulled up and came inside, where Tony was sorting bundles for delivery and I was doing the paperwork; any way...
It seems that last Tuesday and last Friday the ISP conducted an undercover tobacco-compliance check at various local businesses; since we sell tobacco products, we were included. The minor who was working with the ISP happened to be this trooper's son, and the trooper told us that both times when his kid came in to buy cigarettes, we not only 'carded hard' on him, but on the other people who were also buying cigarettes or whatever. Apparently 3 businesses in town sold to the kid, and will be charged under state law with selling tobacco to a minor.
We have a very simple rule of thumb, and our employees understand that no exceptions will be made, ever: if you don't look over 30, we don't sell you tobacco without seeing some form of state-issued photo ID, period. It's easy to remember and the only objections we've ever had to it came from kids who couldn't prove that they were 18.
I'm glad we passed.
