Winter storm warnings, heavy snow warnings, snow advisories and even lake-effect snow warnings (northern Wisconsin, Michigan's U. P.) are widespread in the East and Midwest today. In addition, gale and storm warnings, as well as heavy surf and coastal flood advisories are in effect for various locations along the East Coast as a powerful nor'easter churns toward Cape Cod from just off the North Carolina Outer Banks. The storm already has dumped up to a half foot of snow in the North Carolina mountains and southwest Virginia. In general, the big cities of the Northeast from Washington/Baltimore to Boston can expect 8 to 12 inches or more of snow as the storm grinds northeastward. Even after the storm center passes, however, the snow will not necessarily cease as a separate but somewhat weaker storm system from the Midwest is expected to pivot into the Northeast tomorrow with snow showers and gusty winds.

The Midwestern system is dropping snow, or rain changing to snow, on a good chunk of the Midwest today with signficant lake-effect snow developing (or expected to develop) off Lakes Superior and Michigan. Winds will increase over the northern Great Lakes and in the western Midwest today as the storm system slowly strengthens (but fails to gain the status of its eastern cousin).
