Best Actress
Does anyone disagree with Hillary Swank getting the best actress Oscar? I have to admit that I did not see either movie, but from the clips I did see it seemed to me that Annette Benning was the better actress. From what I saw it seemed that Benning did a better job in the role she played. So do other DUer agree with the best actress Oscar decision?

1. Without seeing either movie it's impossible to judge...
Don't know what was involved in each role. It seems that Swank in addition to acting and taking on the basic role of the character, had the added task of physical training and learning boxing. So that could be a factor as well, all other things being equal.

2. She beat Benning last time, too
when she won for "Boys Don't Cry." Annette was up for "American Beauty." It would have been nice to see Annette win this time; but I think it's kinda cool that Swank won again, 'cause most people still aren't familiar with her. Plus, she used to be on "Beverly Hills 90210." LOL

5. she should have been disqualified from any futher oscars
after doing the core. halle berry probably blew the rest of her oscar invigorated career by doing catwoman as well. Let's hope Jamie fox doesn't go back and do some cheesy wayans brothers movie (i love the wayans but white chix was just scary bad)

6. That was a cool movie - however, the director stole heavily...
...from Scorsese (sped-up panning, etc...), IMO.

9. Swank or Winslet Should have won
They were both terrific. So was the English actress in "Vera Drake." I would have given it to Winslet, because she's a terrific actress, and very much played against type in "Eternal Sunshine." But, Swank definitely earned it. A great movie all around... great Morgan Freeman finally won an Oscar!

16. You're thinking of Imelda Staunton.
Interesting actress -- classically trained, has worked on the stage, on television and in films for decades. She's actually from an Irish Catholic family and grew up in London, I believe. I wanted to see her and Bening tie and have a tearful love-fest on stage, but it was not to be. Staunton already has about 14 awards for her performance in Vera Drake, so I'm sure she has good perspective on it all.

And of all the actresses nominated for Best Actress, Kate Winslet definitely has the most interesting body of work. She comes across as very intelligent, very prepared, and more than ready to take on a challenge. If she doesn't have an utterly fantastic career for the next five decades, God willing, it'll be a crime.

12. Swank was third choice
for "Million Dollar Baby" behind Ashley Judd and Sandra Bullock (according to morning radio, anyway). I haven't seen the movie, but I do admire Swank's past performances. And she's such a physical presence. It's hard for me to imagine petite Ashley Judd matching Swank's ferocity. Must be gratifying for an actor when they know they weren't first choice and they nail the big awards.
By the way, there are some incredible photos of prominent actors from current movies featured in Sunday's New York Times magazine. You've gotta check out the photos of Swank, Jeff Bridges, (better looking than ever), Johnny Depp, and others.

14. I thought Kate Winslet was better than both
Though nothing puts a spring in my step more than Hillary Swank at the Oscars doing her "I'm really a pretty girl! Honestly! Look I'm pretty!" routine.

15. She deserved it.
It was an awesome acting job. This is not to detract from the others. It is always the problem with awards.
