Keep you tax records for AT LEAST 5 years

So Fridy afternoon I get a call from human resources it seems that the state dept. of taxation has put a lien on my wages. They claim I never filed in 2000 and I owe $1,020.17 ($569.00 plus interest and penalties)and they want it by March 25th.

Huh! Wha'?

A letter informing me that I had been audited might have helped the situation huh? I never received any such notice.

Luckily I keep records of everything especially tax returns so I went to their "walk up" office at lunch, showed them the copies of my state tax return and W-2's from 2000, and the released me from the lien. It took me longer to get my lunch than it did to get this cleared up.

Phew!!!!

3. I've always heard 5 but keeping everything is the best bet

I was surprised that after 3 relocations I was still able to find my copies.

I know the states are tight on money, I suppose they all sent their managers to a seminar called "Late Fees and Penalties, new value in old returns"
