1. here's my try
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 03:22 PM by Rabrrrrrr
comma
colon
semicolon
quote, double
quote, single
apostrophe
question mark
period
exclamation mark
interrobang
dash
hyphen
parentheses
brackets

That's 14!

Though I realize now I left out ellipsis, so I have something one of too many up above - I'm assuming that there isn't any distinction between parenthese and brackets.

9. That's a combination of the two, not its own punctuation mark!

13. But it's used a single punctuation mark, and has now a name.
And, the double quote is technically just two quote marks, but is considered it's own symbol as well nowadays.

20. Technically, since you can't write two marks of the same function
next to one another (say, a comma and a period), and the interrobang is legit use, it's its own mark.

22. Aye, that's the side I fall down on
I think, then, we need to make room for 15 punctuation marks.

23. I also think single quotes and double quotes should both be in the list
which would make it 16

(the official list I found just said 'quote marks'). But since they have different functions, they should be separated.

I don't think it makes sense.

yeah, you're right though, though the only difference is that single quotes are used in the middle of double quotes.

I am going to cheat, however -- by looking at the keyboard!! HA HA!!

! Exclamation point
& ampersand
* asterisk
- n-dash
{} curly braces (equals 2?)
() parenthses (equals 2?)
[] square brackets (equals 2)
; semicolon
: colon
" double quote
' single quote or apostrophe (equals 2?)
, comma
. period
? question mark

-- I get 18

OK I'm cheating em dash (which I can't produce properly in this window since it doesn't take ASCII codes or pasted characters): 19!

11. I was gonna argue, but . . .
Yeah, the ampersand and the asterisk probably aren't "punctuation," per se.

8. Cheater --
I didn't think about ampersand or asterisk. Not sure if both of them or either of them are considered punctuation. I'm pretty sure ampersand doesn't, as it's just a symbol for the word "and," but I'm not sure about the asterisk. Probably not.

Just the brace?

This entry appears to have quotes about three times!

On edit: Oops, I guess just twice -- one was the question mark. That brace was a tough one! It's used so infrequently.
