Carbon Monoxide Detector just saved our butts

Came in for the evening and wasn't here for 10 minutes when the carbon monoxide detector went off and showed a reading of over 50 ppm.

Hubby got home and started hunting down the problem and found that our 2nd hot water heater had a problem so he shut it down till he can fix it tomorrow.

3. I don't have a carbon monoxide detector in the house,

have smoke and fire detectors. Guess this is something that I should buy, but I don't have gas. Do I need one if I don't have gas. All electric here.

The generic "smoke detectors" that I bought about twenty years ago will go off if I hold my Bic lighter under them and hold down the button to release the butane, without lighting the flame. The butane sets it off.

7. I know my fire detector works very well

One night I lit my fireplace but forgot to open the flue, no smoke but the fire detector went off. The smoke alarm didn't go off although it does work.

That made me a little comfortable knowing that if there is a fire or high heat in the walls, the fire detector goes off.

Geez, I never thought of carbon monoxide before. What about radon?
