The "anti_shrub can't land a job" blues
Well here I am, been collecting unemployment since January, been working part time in the college library, one class away from an AS in networking, and I can't pay anyone to hire my ass.

I send out resumes and applications and never hear from the place again.

I'm not expecting to land a million dollar career, but I seem to be at a point where I'm overqualified for minimum wage jobs and underqualified for good paying jobs so I end up with neither.

I know there's some Pittsburgh area DU'ers around here, how'd you guys land jobs in this market?

2. Good thread
I mentioned before I'm thinking of starting my own PC repair business, but I admit I'm a bit nervous of jumping in the deep end of the pool with it and finding out it sinks like a rock....

4. do it
All you need is one person who needs your services to get a start. From there you can build.

While I have a f-t position as a university instructor, it nowhere near approximates what I made in the dot-com days. So I've supplemented it with freelance contracts and it's working out great. Just get out and talk to people; network like crazy. Remember that you're supplying a service they need!

3. Look into System Integration
Of industrial controls in factories. This is an area that very few IT people are involved in or think about but should be.

5. Have you considered prostitution?
 :silly: :freak: Just kidding. I hope you find work soon. If not in your field then something you enjoy.

6. At times its crossed my mind
but I wouldn't get many takers with the shape I'm in, heh.

I got my garage cleaned out to set up my shop, I have most of the needed tools on hand anyway, and I can post flyers on the boards at school to advertise.

Just have some starting-something-new jitters I guess.

7. Me too
I can't seem to find a job if it bit me in the ass. I am a college student and I was looking for summer employment. Just something temporary. I applied for 10 different jobs. I heard back from one of them telling me there was not much of a demand for the position I was seeking in the summer.

Oh well, I don't really need a job. Just a little spending money would be nice.

8. Rent yourself out..(for computer lessons, that is)
I have a friend who I pay $20.00 an hour when I need to learn something specific on the computer..

There are tons of us, who do not want to sign up for a whole class and have weekly obligations to go to class, but DO want to learn a specific thing on/about our computers..

Draw up some cute flyers and distribute them through friends or in areas that get a lot of foot traffic..

Create your own job description.. Computer guru..Personal computer trainer...whatever.. There is a need for one on one training ..:)

Another benefit might be a permanent position somewhere..:)

9. How Sad!
There is no job market out there for our talented people. I hear India is paying fantastic wages, if you will relocate. The Bush economy.

10. It definately is calling me....
A friend of mine and I went on an emergency call to help a co-worker who's boss at her other job suffered a computer meltdown.

We backed up his data and replaced his hard drive, and the guy gave us a check for $300 for roughly 3 hours of work.

Needless to say the seed was planted, but it took almost a year of underemployment for the seed to take root.

11. Beer Minimum is hiring.
Other than that, I can't think of many job openings I've seen around lately.
