3. I had this problem last night.
Couldn't connect to Google, couldn't even use the Google toolbar. Oddly enough, same thing trying to use the Yahoo search engine. My computer-wizard boyfriend messed with a bunch of settings, tried many different things, finally realized it was some sort of virus. I can't remember the specifics, but it's something that you can get from a few infective web servers that affects how your browser searches for addresses on the Internet (can't recall the specifics). We ran this special TrojanQHost thing (don't ask me, I have no idea what exactly it is) and then went to Microsoft Update and downloaded the "critical" stuff, and it seems to be back to normal now.

Hope this helps! :-)

5. I recently removed something similar from a friend's PC
Attempting to connect to google brought up a screen that said the page was being redirected. A Norton scan found nothing. I tracked down the executable by doing a search on files modified since the time the problem started. This was about two weeks ago so this virus must be making the rounds.

Other than that, try Ad-Aware or Spybot Search&Destroy
