My Benny's not well. He's my kitty.

He's been sneezing and pawing at his nose for two weeks. I finally took him to the vet yesterday. He gave him an antibiotic shot yesterday and then another one today. I didn't want him doing surgery on his nose, where the problem is, unless it is really necessary. So if the antibiotic doesn't do the job in a few days, the surgery will have to happen.

Well after I brought him home this afternoon, he started acting weird and panting like a dog. I offered him some water but he kept jumping from a table to the floor and to my lap still panting. I called the vet in case there was something in the shots that did this. He said it was probably stress and there was nothing in the shots that should have caused this. The medicine is called Baytril Benny finally settled down on a table next to an open window. He seems to be all right now and is sleeping.

The vets in our little village have gone home now until Monday. Has anybody else had this problem with a cat? How did you treat it?

should have an emergency number. A cat panting like a dog is not good.
If it starts up again, call the vet.

6. He might have a foxtail or blade of grass up there.

Little kitty noses are too small to look up like dogs, so they have to make an incision. He seems to be better now though.

4. Baytril is very strong

He should start to respond quickly to it - if not, like the others have said, call the emergency vet in your area.

One of my cats was once so congested, he couldn't smell food, and he could barely eat - well, that was 11 years ago, and today Hepburn is a very happy and healthy fat cat. Never mess around with an upper respiratory infection with cats, though - you were smart to get him on the Baytril. Keep a close eye on Benny, and I hope he gets well soon.

9. Could he have allergies?

This time of year, my kitty sneezes her head off and gets scabs on the top of her head. My vet said it was allergies.

I know I get them at this time of year. He's two and a half years old. He didn't display anything like this last year. The vet didn't bring this up.

11. Allergies are funny things.

Sometimes I get them in the fall, sometimes I don't. My kitty has had a pretty mild year this year, but last year she needed a cortisone shot because she was so miserable. I hope Benny feels better soon.

12. My first suspicion would be

that whatever has been inflaming the little dude's nose responded to the antibiotic. 'Panting like a dog' may well have been his way of breathing while the fluids (either from an infection around an object or sinus congestion in general) ran through his sinuses. And, of course, stress. But I'll bet he turned down the water because he wasn't sure he'd be able to breathe through his nasal passages.

Poor little guy, I hope he feels better.
