19. When I was a kid

we watched all the country music shows on WSM Saturday afternoons. Those shows were live. I remember the Porter Waggoner show even before he signed "Pretty Miss Dolly Parton", the Bobby Lord show and others. This was the early and mid 60's and those shows had all the big stars on in the afternoon before they appeared at the Opry that night. It was a lot of fun for me as a kid to see that stuff every week.

.....overall. However, I love Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and many of the old school country artists. I also like a lot of the "alternative" country bands out today. Most "country" music today is total and utter shit and present day bands do a good job of ignoring the roots of the this genre.

I actually used to be a big country music fan. This was as recent as a year ago. When the whole boycott of the Dixie Chicks broke out, I decided to counter boycott and haven't listened to a country radio station since.

I still listen to a few singers. I like some of the older ones like George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard. Willie Nelson is one of my favorites.

Of course, I listen to the Dixie Chicks. I like Billy Ray Cyrus and Garth Brooks. I enjoy Shania Twain and Faith Hill, but I'm not sure if they can still be classified as country.
