We're on a streak of BAD luck

about a month ago, we had the furnace guy here to clean the furnace - and we find that the chinmney needed major repairs ($1500.00)

last weekend a truck hits a pole outside of our house, knocking out all utilities for most of the morning. (driver ok, truck totaled) later that morning my partner went outside to talk to the guys from the electric company. She slips and totally trashes her ankle, swollen and has turned all sorts of lovely colors. Just a real bad sprain

On Wednesday she goes to the dentist and find out she needs 4 teeth in the front pulled and replaced with a partial - ($600.00)

yesterday I drop my car off at the garage for inspection and oil change..... sigh....
also needed front brakes and rotors (total bill for everything $470.00)

a day with nothing bad happening (priceless)

My neighbor needed a bridge for ONE tooth and it cost her over $2000... and that was with the dentist offering her a break on the price since she also bringing her family into his practice.

Last root canal I had cost me $850. And that was without the crown, another $750 that I don't have.

Where do you live? Maybe it'll be cheaper to fly up there for dental treatment than it is to have it done here in Florida.

2. Most of these aren't actually "luck"

Just the utility outage and the ankle sprain. The other ones were inevitable. So think of those as positively solving problems.

As for the car, did you know that an auto mechanic's job is not to fix what's wrong, but to find out what else is wrong???

I really wish I'd taken the time to learn about car engines--I get screwed every time I take mine in.

Depending on the make and model of the car, you can often do
front disk brakes yourself for much less money (as low as, oh,
$70 or so). Do you feel handy with wrenches (and a big honking
C-clamp)?

But if you think your luck is running in the direction of hurting
yourself with the wrenches or the car jack or something, then
say "No!". :-)

7. Where I live (Central Florida)..........

...... the local vocational school has a course for auto owners that teaches routine maintenance. You could save money by doing your own small jobs and preventative maintenance like you describe. You can even bring in your own vehicle and work on it there in class. Just a suggestion that might be worthwhile for you to look into. Hope everything works out OK for both of you................ :thumbsup:
