I still listen to their music but like most bands that stay together for a long time they seem to have toned down and lost a little flavor as they got older. I like the earlier stuff better.

7. American Music Club's small label masterpiece - EVERCLEAR
Mark Eitzel was SPIN's songwriter of the year then, even though the album only sold about 10, 000 copies at the time. It was still on everyone' top ten list.

Set off a bidding war by all the major labels.

34. Good Choice.
That's one of my favorite albums.

Have you heard their new one, "Love Songs for Patriots?" Eitzel's voice isn't as strong as it used to be, but the new album is still surprisingly excellent (I hate reunion/comeback albums; this one is great, though)

76. Got it for Xmas. Mr. blm loves it.
Ever hear Eitzel sing live?

I sent MO'D to see AMC in 91. I told him that Eitzel was like the musical version of him. You didn't know whether Eitzel would leave the stage without slashing his wrists howling all the while as he's watching the blood flow, his music and lyrics were so edgy.

96. How did MO'D like it?
That's so cool, BTW. Obviously MO'D had a better sense of humor than Eitzel does....I have a bootleg of theirs from 1991 where he breaks down crying in the middle of "Western Sky." I get the sense that MO'D would have directed such feelings outward.

(I'm so envious, BTW!)

I saw Eitzel do a free show on a beautiful summer day in Central Park in 98....it was just him and Vudi on pedal steel. Very odd surroundings to be in while hearing such brually emotional music. My brother (who is not a deeply musical person) despised it and was laughing at Eitzel's persona the whole time, and the happy families all around us seemed, uh....put out.

In any case, I want "Why Won't You Stay?" played at my funeral.

First with Mike Patton though. (Thankfully they had kicked Courtney Love out of the band several years earlier.)

Their 2nd and 3rd Patton albums (Angel Dust; King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime) were both pretty good with Angel Dust being VERY good. It also appears to be the playbook for both Korn and Limp Biskit.

But I don't hold a grudge against it for that.

62. Firstly, I *am* a die hard Pixies fan.
Secondly, I don't see what is offhand, deprecating or humorous about the quote or the interview.

"Perhaps the most famous quote about the Pixies’ legacy was uttered by someone who wasn’t even a member of the band. Nor did it roll off the tongue of a record company wag or a reverent journalist. It was Kurt Cobain. In a January 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, Cobain admitted that Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was his attempt to ape one of his favourite bands. “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song,” he said. “I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it.” "

He seems pretty sincere to me.

And don't get me wrong. I had never heard of the Pixies before when Nirvana was around. However, after I heard Doolittle I realized that this was where their entire sound and dynamic came from.

24. Most influential certainly.....
But I'm not even sure that it's Nirvana's "best" disk. I could build a strong argument for "In Utero" being a stronger album. In terms of influence, though, "Nevermind" was a blockbuster like no other.

If I'm voting for "best" 90's album, I'm going with Alice in Chain's "Dirt", or the Gathering's "Mandylion". Maybe I'll even go alt-country with ya and choose Lyle Lovett's "Step Inside This House", or better yet, Patty Griffin's excellent "Living With Ghosts". Yeah, that's it. Patty gets my nod.

Much less over-produced, much more intense...it was Cobain at the height of his artistic development...I'd say it's his Ariel.

31. I think you need to make a distinction between
best and most influential. Especially if you are considering a ten year period.

In terms of influence on popular culture and sheer indie pigheadedness, Nevermind.

In terms of amazement and spirit and stick- it- to-emness with political fire, Public Enemy's Fear Of a Black Planet.

30. I don't think I can pick one
The early to mid 90's were a great time period musically.
The Battle of Los Angeles is a great one.

Pieces of You by Jewel was one of the top of the decade.
Beck's Odelay is a top pick.
I liked Nirvana's Unplugged album better than Nevermind.

Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty all put out their best albums since the 70's.

I'll have to think about this a little more.

That's my favorite. I'm not a big grunge fan although I do like (not love) Nirvana's Nevermind. I'm a big fan of '90s britpop, so a lot of my top 90s albums are British. I also love:

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (1999)
Blur - Modern Life is Rubbish (1993)
Supergrass - In it for the Money (1997)
The Verve - A Northern Soul (1995)
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995)
Pulp - Different Class (1995)
Radiohead - The Bends (1995)
Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites (1996)
Weezer - Blue Album

52. Zaireeka by The Flaming Lips
It's totally unique and beautiful. Nobody has ever heard anything like Zaireeka, because it's four CD's designed and mixed to be played AT THE SAME TIME in FOUR DIFFERENT CD PLAYERS!!!

Yes, you insert CD's one through four in four separate CD players and mash "play" on all of them at the same time.

The theory is, with minor differences in CD player tracking speeds, no "performance" of Zaireeka is ever exactly the same. Genius! A concept album that never sounds the same way, twice!

Zaireeka is a compilation for the true audio geek and connisour alike. Play each CD separately, play CD's one and three, or two and four, or one and four, mix it up as you see fit, and hear something brand new each time.

It's a rare gem but you can still find copies if you know where to look. www.flaminglips.com

95. Lots of great pics....
My choice has to be Jeff Buckley's Grace. It's the only album I own where I'd never get tired of any of the tracks. Honestly, every song on the album is excellent, some of them sublime. Grace, Eternal Life, Last Goodbye, Lover You Should Have Come Over, Lilac Wine and Halelujah, all songs I would include in my top 50 all time singles list.
