Does this ever happen to you?
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 05:01 PM by HEyHEY
Okay sometimes on DU I am not 100 per cent sure on how to properly spell a word. So I just say "Fuck it" and jot something down. Then when I go back later I think, "Oh shit that's how you spell that" then I feel like all the world of DU thinks I'm a moron. And I wish I had used my melon for two more seconds and spelled the word correctly.

Ever happen to you?

Also, just so you know I will not hold bad spelling on DU against you!

3. nah...I have this fear that one day someone will make that...
Old argument about how no-one in the younger generation can spell because of spellcheck. ANd I don't wanna be caught looking like a dolt because I can't back up my argument.

Plus I need to know how to spell for my inactive career.

4. you're a moron
In these days of everything being on a keyboard, everybody's typing skills have reached the point where they can type faster than they can think. I watch the words flowing off my fingers and wonder :wtf: am I typing?

9. You know what I do ?
Open your favorite word processor (like Microsoft Word), and use it as a spell checker.

Just copy your unknown word in, and let it offer suggestions.

Cheers
Drifter

10. I could never pass a typing test pre computer now I can type over
I really don't know my typing average..but I can assure you that the ability to backspace to fix errors and the ability to check spelling has moved me up from neanderthal to at minimum to cro magnum...I know this...people look over my shoulder and wonder how I can type so fast...not because I am a fast typist...put a typewriter under my fingers and watch me slow down..it is that fact that errors are quickly and easily corrected...unlike when you needed an erraser to fix errors!

11. The more I read on forums
the more misspelled words I see. After awhile, I don't remember how to correctly spell certain words. Maybe hypocrisy really is hypocrasy?

I was a schmuck the other day about it, and feel badly about getting so serious about it.

It's not only the spelling - it's the ideas that matter.

16. WordWeb!!!
http://wordweb.info/

Unsure of a word, even the free version of WordWeb gives you the cotrrect spelling AND includes a thesaurus.

The is also the All Purpose Spell Checker that you will have to google, since it seems the site has disappeared into bit heaven. But, that one will spell check a whole page, or more, pasted into it.

working in publishing as I do. I've learned to bite my tounge here about it. Probably the only form of censorship I think is OK here :-)

20. easy remedy
bookmark a dictionary site (http://www.yourdictionary.com/). open your bookmarks and click 'manage bookmarks.' drag and drop the dictionary site into 'personal toolbar.'

after that, you should be able to see 'yourdictionary' on your toolbar. you can click on it anytime, check your spelling, and go back to DU when you're done.

22. I don't really care about my spelling
I know that you are going to say that spelling is important and that bad spelling will make me look less intelligent and less professional. That is a good point. If I write documents for work or am applying for a job, I am careful to spell correctly and look the word up or ask someone how to spell it. On DU and other forums, I could care less about my spelling or even grammar. Some of my posts are more formal than others. For the most part, though, I consider this informal speech. The ideas flowing from my head to my fingers are what are important.
