Boston Police to Seek Criminal Summonses tomorrow against Yankees

It looks as if Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia will have to appear in court facing charges of assault and battery. And PEDRO should be arrested? Please.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2003/10/13/charges_eyed_in_bullpen_fracas/

Here is the text of the police report:

"While performing a paid detail at Fenway Park, Det. William Dunn, assigned to the Red Sox bullpen, and Officer Michael Pankievich assigned to the Yankees bullpen. Approximately 7:10 p.m., between the top and the bottom of the 9th inning, while standing outside of the bullpens and facing the crowd (and also bullpen occupants), Det. Dunn and Officer Pankievich observed a pitcher (Jeff Nelson) from the Yankees, approach the victim (who was standing in the corner of the bullpen). At this time (what appeared to be) a verbal confrontation ensued between the victim and Jeff Nelson. Officer Pankievich proceeded to that location in an attempt to separate the parties. While enroute, Jeff Nelson was observed pushing/grabbing the victim in the chest area at which time both parties fell to the ground where Jeff Nelson began punching and flaring his legs at the victim. At that point numerous other members of the Yankees bullpen jumped on the victim (some striking the victim and others attempting to break up the melee). The right fielder (Karim Garcia) from the Yankees was then observed jumping the right field wall, into the bullpen and begin striking down at the victim with his left hand. With the aid of other officers and Red Sox security staff, the parties were separated ending the incident. Further investigation revealed victim sustained numerous injuries, transported to Beth Israel Hospital and treated for injuries to his head, mouth and body (including what appeared to be numerous cleat marks). D899 Dets. Tierney and Gill responded to the Beth Israel Hospital where they further interviewed the victim and photographed his injuries. Lt. Kelly McCormick of Area B-3 forwarded witness information to Det. Dunn and P.O. Pankievich regarding their eyewitness account of the incident where they stated they observed member(s) of the NY Yankees baseball team initiate an unprovoked attack upon the victim. Summonses to be sought in Roxbury District Court for assault and battery on both Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia of the Yankees baseball organization."

1. He teaches Special Ed? Oh brother that sounds like a real wildman huh?
Garcia jumped the fence to get into it, didn't he?

I can't believe the Sox got fined a total of $75K and the Yankess only $15K. Unbelieveable.

2. Goes to show you the depth of pro-Yankee sentiment
it really is unbelievable.

Paul Williams has been all over our news. He is not that big-compared to Nelson's 6'8" and Garcia's 6'1"-and seems pretty milquetoast.

I wonder what the Yankee fans will think of this? I bet they think that the evil Pedro incited that fracas too!

5. He's out of the hospital
Here is a quote from the Herald (conservative rag, but good sports writing):

"Both the Red Sox and Williams' father said that Williams had cleat marks on his back, suggesting that either Nelson or Garcia was also kicking or stomping on the attendant."

6. On ESPN"As Clemens comes into the game he informs the ump....
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 09:53 AM by underpants
that he WILL be throwing inside" Sunday morning on 10:30 Eastern highlights. Oh they know what he was saying? He TOLD them what he was going to do? The Umps are powerless against the mighty Yankees?

Add into this Fox Sports clip of their World Series coverage I saw with my wife last Sunday, was it the Angels winning last year? NO Was it the Dimondbacks beating the Yankees two years ago? OH HEAVENS NO

It was the final out of the Yankees beating the Braves in 1996!!!
I wasn't PO'd about it because I am a Braves fan but because of the obvious pandering that ESPN and Fox do towards the Yankees. Buck and McCarver or like homers when they call a Yankee game and I swear they mention the Yankees in games that NY isn't even in. It is amazing.

8. That quote alone from any other pitcher would bring fines/ejection
You NEVER admit publicly that you're going to throw inside.

Yes, there IS a different set of rules for the Yankees!

9. I don't know if he actually said it, it sounded like spin by ESPN
So the viewer thinks he was upfront about it. BS!

24. I heard Clemens Press Conference Post Game
and what he said was (trying my best)

Clemens "I hope you didnt just warn both benches?"

"yes I did" Umpire

Clemens "well I am still going to Pitch Inside."

Umpire "you understand the consequences if you do"

Clemens "you understand the consequences with my teammates If I don't"

end of discussion. I think Clemens did the right thing and the Ump just re-issued his warning. It didnt matter. He was so inside Manny's head he would have struck out anyway.

13. I wonder where all the Yankee fans are this morning?
After all their whining over the last few days, they've been awfully quiet since Zim apologized and Nelson/Garcia are going to court tomorrow.

14. They havent responded to my post RR
about Zim apologizing, sorry I thought it was new news. I think the Yankee fans heard about my plan to get the Salem witches on our side and Steinbrenner and Cashman(thats their GM right and lol what a name) are trying to pay the witches to work for New York. Dont do it witches or youre gonna get Salemed again ;)

15. I'm only going to say this once
* I do not condone violence on either side. Zim was wrong, Pedro was wrong, Hell, if it makes you feel better, everyone was wrong.

* I would like the Yanks to win, but if they don't- I'll survive.

* I'm not going to hell for liking the Yankees.

* I'm glad Zim apologized.

* Nelson/Garcia- if (I didn't see it, so I can't judge) they did it- they should be prosecuted.

See, not all Yankee fans are evil bastards ;-)

As much as I love my Yanks- Steinbrenner is the devil.

Oh, also Boston Fans/Yankee haters. Please don't compare me to a Repuke because I love the Yanks. Stupid argument, and demeaning. Also, won't make me love them any less. I'd never do a fellow DUer that way. :hi: Thanks.

22. I try not to be that way- like I said it's only a game.
Saturday at the time really sucked- but I got over it.

I won't apologize for loving my boys, though ;-)

:hi: RR

Besides, DUers have a lot better things to do than HATE on each other for their sports teams. When that happens, I avoid the lounge like the plague.

20. Perhaps they've tired of the subject.
At any rate, Zimmer's apology for his part in the proceedings doesn't exonerate the Red Sox who were involved. As noted on the Bloomberg thread (Yes, the NYC Mayor's comments are ridiculous):

Peter Gammons' (correct, IMHO) take on the madness of game 3:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1636542

And the Globe's Dan Shaughnessy keeps Pedro on his self-inflicted hook:

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2003/10/13/martinezs_reign_should_end/

Now, can we get back to baseball?

4. The fines were in relation to the fourth inning incidents.
The bullpen incident has a long way to go before things get settled, and I doubt we'll ever really know what happened. But there will be fines forthcoming in relation to it, that's for sure.
