You are assuming that most men are in fact, for lact of a better word, Butt-ugly. That the question is really Ugly or Good Looking.

In fact, most men are rather average looking. That have some good physical characteristics (I love his eyes!, Oh what a great burly chest! He looks great when he runs!) So are most women.

15. My experience

Years ago our band had an engineer, a medical student, a successful inventor, and a bartender who often told us his IQ was 90. Three of us were at least average looking and maybe a little better. The bartender looked like the young Frank Sinatra and was the ultimate "love 'em and leave 'em" type. Guess who the women chased. I often had the honor of driving the disappointed ones home. It was him or nothing. I learned back then that what women were really looking for and what they said they were looking for were nearly opposites.

I don't doubt your experience for a minute. Some women (largely because of low self-esteem) go after exactly the wrong kind of guy.

However, let's remember that the question was asked at DU. And while we might like to look at Chippendales (I'm a romance novelist and love to hang out with the male cover models at the Romantic Times conventions), I don't want to spend my days with them unless they can carry on an intelligent conversation.

the first thing one overlooks is the appearance of the other person. Who would want a good looking shrew? The person who is a shrew begins to 'look' like a shrew after about 6 months and the 'beauty' wears thin. No, give me someone with the ability to carry on an intelligent conversation and even if he was the 'hunchback of Notre Dame' it could over time be completely ignored. Remember the 'Elephant man'...he was so intelligent people began to forget that he looked what I like to call 'attractive'. I say that because it attracts attention. I also said the common denominator between Elizabeth Taylor and the Elephan Man is that they were both 'attractive'...or attracted attention!!

If beauty was SO important why has Elizabeth Taylor been divorced so many times????

No denying that physicality must have an initial role, but over the long haul it doesn't mean much at all (and, besides, it tends to change :-) ).
