3. Hi ny99 (and Peter)
Re: the milestone -- I'm 18 posts from 5000 (17 now).
Hopefully, I can get the entries in today and stop looking at that almost-but-not-quite-5K thingie in my profile.
John
So someone ask me something.

6. Oh, I'm fine
Another year older (47 on Oct 4) but, after two heart attacks, any day that starts off with being able to get vertical is a good day. The weather in Saginaw (The Center of the Universe) is beautiful today and the library renovation (upstairs) is -- well, I hesitate to say "almost done," as these kinds of projects are never almost done -- so I'll say "coming along nicely" (I have something like 4000 books and have turned two bedrooms of my three-bedroom house into a library to hold them all).
So, I've been busy. But the organization and the fresh paint upstairs (and staying away from all the political chit-chat) is doing me good (my best guess is that the upstairs hasn't been painted since my youngest sister, Angela, lived here -- and she's 42 now).
John
I hope everyone at DU is doing at least as well as I am.

7. Thank you
It's kind of nice to sit down here in front of The Great White Eye and talk to my cyber-buddies. Especially when compared to breathing dust from all those old books and sawdust from the shelves I'm building to hold them all.
John
I have books I didn't even KNOW I had. Lots of them, most of which were buried under other books. To say nothing of the press notes, old newspapers (esp sports sections) and other detritus I've collected over my humble career as some kind of sports writer.

8. I used to have a lot of books but I gave a lot of them
away. You don't realize how much room they take.

9. Oh, yes
After this past month, I have an excellent idea of how much space they take up. Not to mention the 600-700 cassette tapes, 200 albums and numerous CDs I have to put away, too. If these latest modifications don't do the trick, I have enough lumber to start building shelves in my bedroom (which I'd kind of like to keep as open as possible for sleeping and stuff.
The scary part is that I don't even read fiction (except for some stuff which was required for my old American Lit/European Lit/World Lit classes in college). I've never opened a book by, say, Stephen King in my life. All these books are poetry, biographies, histories -- stuff like that.
John
I just collect books, I guess. I collect cats, too.

10. I have a lot of CDs too. I just can't stop buying
them. I have a lot of junk that I have to get rid of soon.

11. Well, stick it in a large box and ship it to me
I'll just build more shelves. I've gotten good at building shelves.
John
DUmail me for the address. It's the place just off Michigan Avenue with all the lumber in the driveway.

12. I wasn't talking about my CDs. I was talking about other
assorted junk.

I saw you had a gathering recently. How was it?

13. The gathering was fine
A little smaller than last year, but I got to meet noonwitch (Sue) and the waiters at the restaurant actually remembered me from last year. The big annual get-together, of course, is FUNDAY, now 249 days, 18 hours and 36 minutes away.
John
Andy the Right Wing Republican even let me borrow his cool Chrysler for the weekend. He has the political awareness of Alley Oop (funny -- we haven't talked since Rush Eightball came out re: his drug addiction), but he's personally quite generous. Of course, I returned it to him in one uncrushed piece.
