Digital camera - Sony dsc-f828 8mega pix or 6 mega FujiS2pro/Cannon EOS10D
the Sony seems like more for the buck at 1200, but the others must have something to justify the few extra hundred for less resolution, or is ir the lenses that are available as choices are better?

the 5 mega pix Sony mvc-cd500 records 6 minutes of video on the built in cd-r at vga (about 150 megs of data) and is only 650, about the cost of just the memory stick (MS PRO 1 GIG) needed for 30 fps on the Sony dsc-f828 - although for the cheap folks that spend a bundle for the camera and then buy small compact flash- the f828 is the only Sony that I know of to take both memory stick and compact flash.

OK - when I win the lottery - its the Sony f828! - at least until I read the next Catalog!

:-)

1. I have a Sony Mavica cd500...
Nice unit. Only 5MP but has got just about everything an SLR has. Except the better lens. :-(

Digital cameras are best for still pics. They've got digital camcorders which do better. IMHO, of course. :D

2. So glad you brought up this topic. I was getting ready to begin

researchinga similar purchase....a digital movie camera.

All I know is that pixels are really important to get a clear crisp picture, and it's got to be compatible with a computer (though I can't imagine any wouldn't be). I'm not sure what technological areas the manufacturers have been focusing their attentions on recently (where the improvements are), but I'm going to watch this thread and see what I learn.

I'm also considering a flat screen t.v. (my t.v. is 20 years old and at death's door!). I've been told to avoid plasma because they lose their gas eventually and get dart. The better type is the other kind (can't remember the type) and then there is even a newer one that's better still. Makes my head swim! I do hope this technical conversation is in 'english'.

3. For point-n-shoot, I love my Canon Elph.
Tiny, solid and reliable. Long battery life, too (although it uses a proprietary battery). Plus, I like the fact that the case is made out of metal, not plastic.

4. Is the technology good enough yet to get good stills from a digital
movie camera?

6. VGA stills is all you get - same as a $50 digital would give
There is a combo out their - separate cam and still in the same shell -but why I do not know.

5. Why so many megapixels?
Do you have a need for that much? I have a Kodak Easyshare LS443 with 4 megapixels and it gives me more than I need with fantastic resolution. If the camera's just for taking pictures, you're hunting rabbits with an elephant gun.
