When he was (mis-)managing the Red Sox, he was more concerned with "cleaning up" the team (i.e. getting rid of any player, no matter how talented, with an independent or non-conformist attitude, or even with "long hair"), than he was with actually winning. I think a case can be made that the 1977-78 Sox were, at least to begin with, one of the most talented teams ever, but he got rid of so many good players that, by the time of the 1978 end-of-season collapse, they no longer had the players they needed to compete.
