I love bread, which is why I think the Atkins diet is so fucked up....

The fresh loaves with a hint of rosemary at the Macaroni Grill is VERY hard to beat. It is truly exceptional. I stop by and pick up a loaf every time I cook Italian. Whats left over makes the world's finest breadcrumbs.

Split loaf almost in half, slather with spicy brown mustard, pile on saurkraut and an Opa's smoked sausage hot from the grill. Ah yes, Fredericksberg, TX and the Gillespie County Fairgrounds . . . find! Believe it or not I thought Pepperidge Farms was the best for years. But, something happened to all their breads in the last year and I don't buy them anymore. They did something to their flour. I buy "9th Street Bakery" now.

10. Homemade Foccacia With Rosemary

Or homemade sourdough. And two secrets for a good sourdough loaf is to put bricks or ovenproof tiles in the oven to bake on and also to spritz water into the oven just before putting the loaf in. Oh, and when making sourdough you have to use well water (water with no chemicals in it).

18. Dense bread is good.

My test for a loaf of bread is to throw it at someone. If they get hit and it doesn't hurt them, then the bread is too fluffy. Similarly if they catch it easily it is too fluffy. If they get hit by it and it hurts them it is of proper density. It is also good if they catch it, but like a football, or if they dodge the bread because they know a big old kilogram of pain is coming their way.

We've got a world-class bakery about 20 minutes down the road. Great sourdough. Wonderful sesame semolina. All sorts of goodies.

Mmmmm.. poppy seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds. It's terrific, but it tears up the roof of the mouth. I like it with Korean BBQ tofu, olive salad, provelone cheese, and lettuce.

33. I don't know what it's called

but if any of you have ever been to the Crocodile Cafe in California, they've got this really fantastic bread that's served warm with butter. It's sort of spherical in shape and is cut into four pieces though not all the way through as they connect at the bottom. It's pretty confusing but sooo good! I like Gladstone's bread too...I think it's sourdough.

Oh, and this Italian restaurant near me (in South Pasadena) has really great bread too. I like restaurant breads :)
