Poll question: How Often Do You Change Jobs?

I've held the same position now for almost a year, which is farily long for me. If I make it to two years, that'll be the longest consecutive streak at any one place.

3. Ages. Basically I hate that --

would love to move on every other year or so -- but when you get old, that gets harder.

4. I've been on my current job for four years

That's the longest I've ever held a job. Before that, it was two-and-a-half years. Aside from that, I held jobs from anywhere from one years to a couple of days, depending on how much I hated it.

God, I miss the days when I could mooch off my parents for a while after telling some dipshit supervisor to fuck off!

5. I have 3 jobs right now

All part time. One I've had for 8 years, one for 5 years, and one for almost a year. When I took the newest one, I quit a job I'd had for 8 years - where I'm still available to fill in, if they get in a bind.

Right now, all of my jobs are important to me. I am fortunate to have meaningful work in all three cases. Of course meaningful work is part time and not making me rich. ;-) Oh well.

7. Pay sucks-benefits great

The pay raises are almost always under inflation- things have started to change, I started interveiwing for other positions. I was being blocked by my manager behind my back. I went up to HR and demanded I be allowed to move to a production job. I then interveiwed again, job was offered- boss matched the pay and asked me to continue on in my current job.
Benefits are great- 401k match,med, dental, PENSION plan. Bonus most every year. I have 17 more years before I can collect the pension so I am sticking with my current employer.

9. I tend to last approx. 3 years before I am laid off

I tend not to seek other employment unless I am forced to do so. I don't like having to break in a new boss as well as new co workers. I think the benefits I have with the company I am at now are pretty good so I hope I am able to stay there awhile. Beginning in January 2004 they will match our 401k dollar for dollar up to 6%...that's pretty good these days! That will enable me to save a bunch of money.

I have been laid off four times in the last 12 years. Twice with Bushies and twice during Clinton's reign.

10. Every time my current job gets moved overseas,

or downsized out of existence.

Most recently when my small-to-medium-sized company was bought by a French conglomerate (Vivendi) and then dismantled and closed down.

11. I'm in the computer industry

I think the average is 3 1/2 years. BUt for some reason I've been with the same company for 7 years now. I have to hold on because the economy is pretty bad! It was easy to get a job in the Clinton years. :-)

14. I've worked in different departments, but same company

Despite being there 6 years, I'm low on the seniority totem pole and they're not keen on promoting from within or using employees to their FULL potential (this is America after all, and not in a civilized world). x(

As long as I don't have to go back to certain departments, I won't quit. I suppose working in those two departments would cause more emotional distress than anything, and they had in the past.
