4. I'll try...
1. Who wrote and recorded “The Twist” in 1959, a year before Chubby Checker waxed it?

???

2. What was the first African-American vocal group to have a #1 pop single in the rock ‘n’ roll era? For bonus points, with which of their many hits did they accomplish that feat?

Oh, jeez, I dunno... the Platters? Smoke Gets in Your Eyes?

3. What is the shortest #1 pop single of all time?

I'd say 'Bim-Bom' by Sergio Mendez or 'Shape of Things to Come' by Max Frost & the Troopers

4. Which #1 pop single has the shortest title of all time?

''Help?"

5. Milking this theme for all it’s worth, which #1 artist had the shortest name of all time?

The glyph formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince?

6. What was the first instrumental to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1980s?

The Axel F Theme or Rockit? (or was it that shitty ballerina one?)

7. What do the following artists all have in common?

Other than they're carbon-based, bipedal life forms? No clue.

6. Guess I oughta give the answers

Sorry I posted such a difficult quiz! When you've been immersed in rock 'n' roll history for 25 of your 37 years (as I have), what seems obvious to you may not be that way for the majority. I'll try to remember that from now on! :-)

Anyway, here are the answers:

1. Hank Ballard
2. The Platters with "My Prayer" (1956)
3. "Stay" by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs (Just 1:37 in length!)
4. "Why" by Frankie Avalon (1959)
5. M, of "Pop Muzik" fame (1979)
6. "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis (1982)
7. Each of these artists only ever once cracked the pop top forty with a single. They even got into Wayne Jancik's "Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders." Hard to believe for most of those acts, but it's the truth, y'all!
