What do you think is the best lyric from a song?
My vote goes to:

And in the end
the love you take,
is equal to the
love you make.

211. a rare line from jefferson starship.....
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 11:02 PM by rppper
i know it's to late now...
but i wish i could go back in time...
and start all over somehow...
and get it right from the start...

from "find your way back"

i love the cowboy junkies..."lament" is one of my favorites...a line from there that seems fitting...used to be my old sig line in DU version 1....

Those in the know say how it goes
you plan on reapin' you better sow
you plan on sleepin' you better keep movin'
sleepin ain't allowed around here you know

and of course my current sig line in it's entirity...one of a handfull of black sabbath/dio version songs that i like.....the last 2 verses of "heaven and hell" hit home, but if you've never heard the entire song, it's certainly worth a listen.....

They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's heaven and hell

And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's heaven and hell

2. Ani Difranco - FUEL
They were digging a new foundation in Manhattan
They discovered a slave cemetery there
And may their souls rest easy now that lynching has been frowned upon
And we've moved on to the electric chair

And I wonder who's gonna be president
Tweedle dum or tweedle dumber?
And who's gonna have the big
Blockbuster box office
This summer
How 'bout we put up a wall
Between the houses and the highway
And then you can go your way
And I can go my way

Except all the radios agree with all the TVs
And all the magazines agree with all the radios
And I keep hearing that same damn song
Everywhere I go
Maybe I should put a bucket over my head
And a marshmallow in each ear
And stumble around for another dumb numb week
For another hum drum hit song to appear

People used to make records
As in a record of event
The event of people
Playing music in a room
Now everything is cross - marketing
It's about sunglasses and shoes
Or guns or drugs
You choose

We got it rehashed
We got it half - assed
We're digging up all the graves
And we're spitting on the past
And we can choose between the colors
Of the lipstick on the whores
Cuz we know difference
Between the font of twenty percent more
And the font of teriyaki
You tell me
How does it make you feel?
You tell me what's real

And they say that alcoholics are always alcoholics
Even when they're as dry as my lips for years
Even when they're stranded on a small desert island
With no place in two thousand miles to buy beer
And I wonder is he different is he different
Has he changed
What he's about
Or is he just a liar
With nothing to lie about
I'm headed for the same brick wall
Is there anything I can do
About anything at all

Except go back to that corner in manhattan
And dig deeper
Dig deeper this time
Down beneath the impossible pain of our history
Beneath unknown bones
Beneath the bedrock of the mystery
Beneath the sewage system an the path train
Beneath the cobblestones and the water main
Beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals
Between the screeching of kamikaze cab wheels wheels
Beneath everything I can think of to think about
Beneath it all
Beneath all get out
Beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel
There's a fire just waiting for fuel

95. A favorite of mine
when you come to cover me with your kisses
fresh like a daisy chained up in a lion's den
I'll know you by the thunderclap
pouring like a rain of blood to my emotions
and that is why
I stumble to my knees
and why underneath the heavens
with the stars burning and exploding
I know I could never let you down

I know you don't wanna hear me cryin'
An I know you don't wanna hear me deny
That your satisfaction lies in your ILLUSIONS
But your delusions are yours and not mine
We take for granted we know the whole story
We judge a book by its cover
And read what we want
Between selected lines

12. I have 3 favorites...
From "Magdalena" by A Perfect Circle:
I'd sell
My soul
My self-esteem a dollar at a time
For one chance
One kiss
One taste of you my magdalena

From "46 & 2" by Tool this one line seems to stick with me (not that the whole song doesn't as well):
Change is coming.
Now is my time.
Listen to my muscle memory.
Contemplate what I've been clinging to.
Forty-six and two ahead of me.

And it's really hard to pick a favorite line from "Stinkfist" by Tool but here goes:
Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something.

"In on your joke" - Christ on a Crutch
It's your story
… and I'm just the antithesis
It's your american dream
… and here I sit in this fucking nightmare

Watching you
Biding time
And speaking lines
And I'm wondering why you're even here at all

It's your salvation that leaves me in eternal hell
It's your complacent life of shit
That leaves me choking on the smell of;

Ruined lives and wasted minds and doomed ideas

That leave people shot down in the street
Children cold with nothing to eat
The homeless with their shoeless feet
While fatcats and their wealthy hags
Pass people living out of bags

Shit! Can't someone give me hope?
Your goal in life is to live until you die
My goal in death is to escape this pathetic human sty

Cause when the air is poison
And the raindrops burn
And sex is death
It's hard for me to see what's left

But when generals are struck dead from the sky
And politicians are victims of their lies
When all the cops are locked in jail
And all the priests have gone to hell
When lawyers rot in growing heaps
And all world leaders are buried deep

That's the day!
That's the day I'll find my hope

16. What's Going On
Written by: Al Cleveland/Marvin Gaye/Renaldo Benson
Performed by: Marvin Gaye
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

23. There's a line in a Morrissey song...
"when you find that you've organized your feelings, for people who didn't like you then and certainly don't like you now"

That line just slaps me in the face everytime I hear it and especially when I first hear it. It reminds me to be who I want to be, without compromise, without shame. (Sometimes though, that's easier said than done.)

26. Tom Waits - "Step Right Up"
<jazzy bass riff>

Step right up
step right up
step right up
Everyone's a winner, bargains galore
That's right, you too can be the proud owner
Of the quality goes in before the name goes on
One-tenth of a dollar
one-tenth of a dollar
we got service after sales
You need perfume? we got perfume
how 'bout an engagement ring?
Something for the little lady
something for the little lady
Something for the little lady, hmm
Three for a dollar
We got a year-end clearance, we got a white sale
And a smoke-damaged furniture
you can drive it away today
Act now, act now
and receive as our gift, our gift to you
They come in all colors, one size fits all
No muss, no fuss, no spills
you're tired of kitchen drudgery
Everything must go
going out of business
going out of business
Going out of business sale
Fifty percent off original retail price
skip the middle man
Don't settle for less
How do we do it?
how do we do it?
volume, volume, turn up the volume
Now you've heard it advertised, don't hesitate
Don't be caught with your drawers down
Don't be caught with your drawers down
You can step right up, step right up

That's right, it filets, it chops
It dices, slices, never stops
lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn
And it mows your lawn
and it picks up the kids from school
It gets rid of unwanted facial hair
it gets rid of embarrassing age spots
It delivers a pizza
and it lengthens, and it strengthens
And it finds that slipper that's been at large
under the chaise longe for several weeks
And it plays a mean Rhythm Master
It makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar
And it's only a dollar, step right up
it's only a dollar, step right up

'Cause it forges your signature.
If not completely satisfied
mail back unused portion of product
For complete refund of price of purchase
Step right up
Please allow thirty days for delivery
don't be fooled by cheap imitations
You can live in it, live in it
laugh in it, love in it
Swim in it, sleep in it
Live in it, swim in it
laugh in it, love in it
Removes embarrassing stains from contour sheets
that's right
And it entertains visiting relatives
it turns a sandwich into a banquet
Tired of being the life of the party?
Change your shorts
change your life
change your life
Change into a nine-year-old Hindu boy
get rid of your wife
And it walks your dog, and it doubles on sax
Doubles on sax, you can jump back Jack
see you later alligator
See you later alligator
And it steals your car
It gets rid of your gambling debts, it quits smoking
It's a friend, and it's a companion
And it's the only product you will ever need
Follow these easy assembly instructions
it never needs ironing
Well it takes weights off hips, bust
thighs, chin, midriff
Gives you dandruff, and it finds you a job
it is a job
And it strips the phone company free
take ten for five exchange
And it gives you denture breath
And you know it's a friend, and it's a companion
And it gets rid of your traveler's checks
It's new, it's improved, it's old-fashioned
Well it takes care of business
never needs winding
Never needs winding
never needs winding
Gets rid of blackheads, the heartbreak of psoriasis

36. From American Beauty by the Grateful Dead. Friend of the Devil
Got a wife in Chino, babe
And one in Cherokee
First one says she's got my child
But it don't look like me

I set out running but I take my time
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I might get some sleep tonight

39. Led Zep's "Over the Hills and Far Away"
Hey lady--you got the love I need
Maybe more than enough.
Oh Darling... walk a while with me
You've got so much...

Many have I loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know...

43. Well, I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused
But since their wings all got rusted
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes

But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain
That's when I knew that I could not refuse
And I won't get any older now
The angels wanna wear my red shoes

47. Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman...
... by Bryan Adams

The best line in this song is "When you can see your unborn children in her eyes."

WOW!

to really love a woman
to understand her - you gotta know her deep inside
hear every thought - see every dream
n´ give her wings - when she wants to fly
then when you find yourself lyin´ helpless in her arms
ya know ya really love a woman
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s really wanted
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s the one
cuz she needs somebody to tell her that it´s gonna last forever
so tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?
to really love a woman
let her hold you - till ya know how she needs to be touched
you´ve gotta breathe her - really taste her
till you can feel her in your blood
n´ when you can see your unborn children in her eyes
ya know ya really love a woman
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s really wanted
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s the one
cuz she needs somebody to tell her that you´ll always be together
so tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?
you got to give her some faith - hold her tight
a little tenderness - gotta treat her right
she will be there for you, takin´ good care of you
ya really gotta love your woman...
then when you find yourself lyin´ helpless in her arms
ya know ya really love a woman
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s really wanted
when you love a woman you tell her that she´s the one
cuz she needs somebody to tell her that it´s gonna last forever
so tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?
just tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?
just tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?

53. "Chimes Of Freedom"

Chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors
Whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees
On the unarmed road of flight
And for each and every underdog soldier in the night
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned and forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burning constantly at stake
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless,
seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
And for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 03:05 PM by mac56
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time and we watched with one last look
Spellbound and swallowed 'til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones and worse
And for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints , no sinners , no devil as well
No pearly gates , no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring , the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
and it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
that Father , Son and Holy Ghost
is just somebody's unholy hoax
and if you're up there you'd perceive
that my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in
it's you
Dear God.

Everybody's laughing

Crimson sky
Set the sails our hearts are open
Don't cry
I believe release is in your smile

The tide shall turn to shelter us from storm
The seas of charity shall overflow
And bathe us all

Walk on by
Make believe our exile's chosen
Untied
I can see our freedom's in your mind

The tide shall turn to shelter us from storm
The seas of charity shall overflow
And bathe us all

Asked me how I pleaded,"Not Guilty, I said"

"Nothing touched the trigger but the Devil's Right Hand"

From "Devil's Right Hand" by Steve Earle.Emmylou Harris is on record as saying this is one of the most perfect songs ever written.

This popped into my head immediately upon reading this question, so although there are others, this one is my pick:

I'm gonna find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each others paint by number dreams

And we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light
Comes streamin' in
We'll get up and do it again.

I don't know what it means, but it sounds great.

Also, La Vie en Rose:

Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is La Vie En Rose
When you kiss me heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see La Vie En Rose
When you press me to your heart
And in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak angels sing from above
Everyday word seems to turn into love song
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La Vie En Rose

Hurt

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear my crown of shit
on my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stain of time
the feeling disappears
you are someone else
I am still right here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Also my siggy, its from Pearl Jam's Do the Evolution.

105. "Death or Glory," The Clash...or "Slack Motherfucker" by Superchunk
"Every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world
ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl
Love and Hate tattoed across the knuckles of his hands
the hands that slap his kids around 'cuz they don't understand

how Death or Glory
becomes Just another Story

.....I believe in this and it's been tested by research:
He who fucks nuns will later join the church...."

Great Tune. Those lyrics slay me every time.

Superchunk, "Slack Motherfucker:"

"I'm working
But I'm not working for you
You slack motherfucker!!!!"

Great song about an asshole boss. Whenever I get pissed at my supervisors, I go to the bathroom and sing this as loud as I can.

145. Love that Clash
Anything by Bad Religion is great too, they have amazing lyrics like:

The Flat Earth Society is meeting here today,
With their candlesticks and compasses,
And the flagship Humana is sailing far away,
With great determination... and no destination.

-----

Morals, human triumph, bestowments from the past
Victories don't mean a thing if they don't last
We are just marching towards extinction,
With blinders on our eyes,
Jeopardizing everything we've learned
And come to realize, you call that wise?

108. My choice is a bit strange
I'm very interested by surrealism and existentialism, so maybe that explains my choice.

From The Voyeur of Utter Destruction as Beauty, by David Bowie:

I shake
And stare at the sun
Till my eyes burn
I shake
At the mothers brutal vermin
I shake
And stare at the watery moon
With the same desire
As the sober Philistine
I shake
Worm, the pain and blade
The screw
Is a tightening Atrocity
I shake
For the reeking flesh
Is as romantic as hell
The need
To have seen it all
The Voyeur of Utter Destruction
As beauty

Research has pierced
All extremes of my sex
Call it a day
Call it a day
Needle point life
Blinds the will to be next
Call it a day

109. DARKEST HOUR - the Sadist Nation
One nation under the gun
Where forward thinking is shunned
A morbid tradition
Of archaic value systems
Where violence justified
Is just another pride
Under the surface lies
A holy plastic empire
With guarded golden fences
Where misfortune
Shelters decisions
A pain wrought from blood flowing green
The myth of protection
Is a sick fascination
A culture of violence is what you are feeding
Fear is an heirloom
And hate is contagious
A nation of sadists is what you are breeding
It's everywhere
It's everywhere that you see
But who decides
If you watch or turn the other cheek
And only in your mind
Is it your given right to be armed to the teeth
It's a common disease
The only immunity is to disarm
This holy plastic empire disease

ONE NATION
UNDER THE GUN
WHERE FORWARD THINKING IS SHUNNED
A MORBID TRADITION,
ARCHAIC VALUE SYSTEM
WHERE VIOLENCE JUSTIFIED
IS JUST ANOTHER PRIDE

ONE NATION

UNDER

THE

GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...

A NATION OF SADISTS IS WHAT YOU ARE BREEDING!

110. I like "This One"
by Paul McCartney.

Did I Ever Take You In My Arms,
Look You In The Eye, Tell You That I Do,
Did I Ever Open Up My Heart
And Let You Look Inside.

If I Never Did It, I Was Only Waiting
For A Better Moment That Didn't Come.
There Never Could Be A Better Moment
Than This One, This One.

The Swan Is Gliding Above The Ocean,
A God Is Riding Upon His Back,
How Calm The Water And Bright The Rainbow
Fade This One To Black.

Did I Ever Touch You On The Cheek
Say That You Were Mine, Thank You For The Smile,
Did I Ever Knock Upon Your Door
And Try To Get Inside?

If I Never Did It, I Was Only Waiting
For A Better Moment That Didn't Come.
There Never Could Be A Better Moment
Than This One, This One.

The Swan Is Gliding Above The Ocean,
A God Is Riding Upon His Back,
How Calm The Water And Bright The Rainbow
Fade This Swan To Black.

What Opportunities Did We Allow To Flow By
Feeling Like Like The Timing Wasn't Quite Right?
What Kind Of Magic Might Have Worked If We Had Stayed Calm,
Couldn't I Have Given You A Better Life?

Did You Ever Take Me In Your Arms,
Look Me In The Eye, Tell Me That You Do?
Did I Ever Open Up My Heart,
Let You Look Inside?

If I Never Did It, I Was Only Waiting
For A Better Moment That Didn't Come.
There Never Could Be A Better Moment
Than This One, This One.

tell me true tell me why was jesus crucified
is it for this that daddy died?
was it for you? was it me?
did i watch too much t.v.?
is that a hint of accusation in your eyes?
if it wasn't for the nips
being so good at building ships
the yards would still be open on the clyde
and it can't be much fun for them
beneath the rising sun
with all their kids committing suicide
what have we done maggie what have we done
what have we done to england
should we shout should we scream
"what happened to the post war dream?"
oh maggie maggie what have we done?

--------------------------------------------------------

take all your overgrown infants away somewhere
and build them a home a little place of their own
the fletcher memorial
home for incurable tyrants and kings

and they can appears to themselves every day
on closed circut t.v.
to make sure their still real
it's the only connection they feel
"ladies and gentlemen, please welcome reagan and heig
mr. begin and friend mrs. thatcher and paisley
mr. brezhnev and party
the ghost of nixon
and now adding colour a group of anonymous latin
american meat packing glitterati"

did they expect us to treat them with any respect

they can polish their medals and sharpen their
smails, and amuse themselves playing games for a while
boom boom, bang bang, lie down your dead

safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye
with their favourite toys
they'll be good girls and boys
in the fletcher memorial home for colonial
wasters of life and limb

is everyone in?
are you having a nice time?
now the final solution can be applied

From the Greendale CD, "Leave the Driving:"

But there's no need to worry
There's no reason to fuss
Just go on about your work now
And leave the driving to us

And we'll be watching you
In everything you do
And you can do your part
By watching others too

129. Stan Ridgway, the man made out of words
One of his best: Peg and Pete and Me

I can feel the life runnin’ out of me
Workin’ here at pete’s
Two years ago it was just the thing
Workin’ cars part time every week
I met ’em both at a drag race
They both dressed pretty snappy that day
Pete’s wife peg, she put the make on me
While pete just looked the other way

Now no one can say what your future may hold
Or what your life will have in store
We went home that night, pete passed out on the couch
And then peg pulled me down on the floor
Well, I know now she knew what she was doing
Forbidden fruit, but what the hell, I bit
That’s all it took - my fate was sealed
That night the flame was lit

Chorus:
Every night when the lights go out
Pete drinks his booze and then he passes out
I hear a footstep outside my door
And then I remember what I started working here for
Peg and pete and me
One and one and one make three
Peg and pete and me
One and one and one make three
Now tell me what would you do
If you were in my shoes?

Tonight, peg, we gotta stop this thing
I don’t know if we can
Peg said, don’t worry, now, pete’s asleep
And I’ve got a certain plan
You know everything is in my name, she said
And anyway I love you so very much
He’ll never feel a thing - just like he never woke up
And after that it’ll just be us

Chorus repeat

The next morning, when I woke up
Peg was gone, the detective said
Son, you gotta come downtown with me
’cause we know you killed pete dead
The jury found me guilty
And sent me up for ninety-nine to life
And if there’s any advice I can give from this cell
Never trust a rich dead man’s wife

131. Senser - "Age of Panic" - it's f'kin excellent!
My name is crash
sidewinding i flash
like a mine or a flare
don't look away 'cos i'm already in there
i've been there
wherever you stare
i've been there longer than you care to remember
buried deep inside you
now you must step to accept all the paths behind you
pain, freed(?) in pain and it's back again
only the scars in your brain remain
so you look for a vent you consent to escape what's gone
and now i'm on
and from the nipple to the needle to the bottle and you're never satisfied
for these crimes you must be tried
you can't hide
'cos i am reality
your birthright is a world of insanity
disconnected legacy, and you will never see
an end to the global savagery
continuing to feed your desire for more
but deep down you know that you can never find what you're looking for
it's gone
and you can't buy it back
and now your senses are under attack
so you act automatic, return to the frantic nation of addicts
reduced to the manic false erratic solemn doped-up slaves and servants of greed
(because you were)

<chorus>
born, into an age of panic
into the age of panic
born, into an age of panic
into the age of panic

comin' on <?> with the master plan
faster man
and i'm about to tell you just who i am
i am the reality you can't escape
the visions, recorded on disk and tape
the rape, the horror the shame so familiar
my words fill you with dread and then kill you dead
stone cold as you try to fill the hole in your soul around fifty miles wide
all the contradictions each time you speak
eyes keep movin lookin down at your feet
i am the part that you can never reconcile
right here but you're livin' in exile
working in cities of stone
the shadows grown
thousands of people but you're all alone
in your own little zone like a drone
working in hives all your lives bowing down to the throne
the overlords, made in your own image
anaesthatize you in the global village
now you're finished, dependent, lost in a maze
you're dazed as you stare at the glowing <?> erase
your future pulses in a computer
(i knew?), how that suits ya
you never seen chaos now instilled as i will
and now i'm just waiting for the kill
<chorus>

136. OK, another one from me...............

Love this thread :)

I Don't Need A Hero

You always said I was a liar
But we burn like a house on fire
No matter what, you know that to be true
And everything you gave to me
Changed everything I used to be
Much more than anyone I ever knew

And I don't need a hero
I don't need a soldier
I did when I was younger
But now that i'm older
I don't need a father
I don't wanna be your mother
It's just that anyone of us is half
Without another one is you

The colors of that piece of time
Are still so fresh inside my mind
And it makes the movie
Of my life seem pale
And all the games I have to play
I got to give a lot of me away
But the part with us
Will never be for sale

The words of love have been confused
The ways of love have been abused
Is this a lottery you win or lose ?
I don't know
It's an endless circle over time
The place inside where I hold and find
Your sweet and happy music in my soul

137. The Jam - When You're Young
Top British Band. :-)

Life is timeless, days are long when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum
Life is a drink and you get drunk when you're young

Life is new and there's things to be done
You can't wait to be grown up
Acceptance into the capital world
You pull on some weed, then you pull on someone when you're young

But you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to comprehend
Why you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end

But you don't mind you've got time on your side
And they're never gonna make you stand in line
You're just waiting for the right time

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young
You swear you're never ever gonna work for someone
No corporations for the new age sons
Tears of rage roll down your face
But still you say "it's fun"

And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam

It's got you in its grip before your born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum

bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
head like a hole
black as your soul
i'd rather die
than give you control
head like a hole
black as your soul
i'd rather die
than give you control
bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
bow down before the one you serve
you're going to get what you deserve
bow down before the one you serve (ow ow)
you're going to get what you deserve (ow ow)
bow down before the one you serve (ow ow)
you're going to get what you deserve (ow ow)

In reality, the whole Pretty Hate Machine album is just a work of art.

154. Here's a good one from Ann Lister...
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 04:03 PM by GoddessOfGuinness
Icarus
(Ann Lister)

I never wanted to fly high
I was too fond of walking
And when you said you'd touch the sky
I thought it was your way of talking
And then you said you'd build some wings
And find out how it could be done
But I was doubtful of everything
I never thought you'd reach the sun

You were so clever with your hands
I'd watch you for hours
With the glue and the rubber bands
Feathers and lace and flowers
And the finished wings they glowed so bright
Like some bird of glory
I began to envy you your flight
Like some old hero's story

You tried to get me to go with you
You tried always to dare me
But I looked at the sky so blue
I thought the height would scare me
But I carried your wings for you
Up the path to the cliff face
Kissed you goodbye and watched your eyes
Already bright with sunlight

Oh it was grand at the start
To watch you soaring higher
There was a pain deep in my heart
The wings seemed tipped with fire
Like a seagull or a lark
Rising up forever
Like some ember or some spark
Rising from earth to heaven

Then I believed all that you said
I believed all that you told me
You'd do a thing no man has ever done
You'd touch the stars to please me
But then I saw the white wings fail
I saw the feathers falter
And watched you drop like a ball of gold
Into the wide green water

Now some are born to fly high
And some are born to follow
Some are born to touch the sky
While some walk in the hollow
And as I watched your body fall
I knew that really you had won
For your grave was not the earth
But the reflection of the sun

156. Dylan, Bad Religion and Megadeth

I Want to Conquer the World (Bad Religion)

hey brother christian with your high and mighty errand
your actions speak so loud I can't hear a word you're saying
hey sister bleeding heart with all of your compassion
your labors soothe the hurt but can't assuage temptation

hey man of science with your perfect rules of measure
can you improve this place with the data that you gather
hey mother mercy can your loins bear fruit forever?
is your fecundity a trammel or a treasure?

I want to conquer the world
give all the idiots a brand new religion
put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil
promote equality in all of my decisions
with a quick wink of the eye and a god you must be joking.

hey mister diplomat with your worldly aspirations
did you see your children cry when you left them at the station?
hey moral soldier you've got righteous proclamation
and precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations
I want to conquer the world
give all the idiots a brand new religion
put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil
promote equality in all of my decisions

I want to conquer the world
expose the corporates and feed them to the children
I'll do away with air pollution
and then I'll save the whales
we'll have peace on earth
and global communion

Faith Alone (Bad Religion)

heard a sermon from a creaky pulpit with no one in the nave,
I paid a visit to the synagogue and I left there feeling blame,
no one could tell me what to do,
no one had the ability to answer me,

what the world needs now is some answers to our problems,
we can't buy more time because our tender isn't valid,
if your soul needs love you can get consoled by pity,
but it looks as though faith alone won't sustain us anymore,

watched the scientists throw up their hands conceding,
"progress will resolve it all",
saw the manufactures of earth's debris ignore another green peace call,

no one could tell me what to do,
they had not the capacity to answer me,
what the world needs now is some accountability,
we can't buy more time because time won't accept our money,

if your soul needs love you can always have my pity,
but it looks as though faith alone won't sustain us no more.....

Blowing in the Wind (Bob Dylan)

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Megadeth (Holy Wars...The Punishment Due)

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand

Fools like me, who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep, for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?

A country that's divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased, no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand

The end is near, it's crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Don't look now to Israel
It might be your homelands

Holy wars

Upon my podium, as the
Know it all scholar
Down in my seat of judgement
Gavel's bang, uphold the law
Up on my soapbox, a leader
Out to change the world
Down in my pulpit as the holier
Than-thou-could-be-messenger of God

Wage the war on organized crime
Sneak attacks, repel down the rocks
Behind the lines
Some people risk to employ me
Some people live to destroy me
Either way they die.

They killed my wife and my baby,
With hopes to enslave me
First mistake... last mistake
Paid by the alliance, to slay all the giants
Next mistake... no more mistakes!

Fill the cracks in, with judicial granite
Because I don't say it, don't mean I ain't
Thinkin' it.
Next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away
I know what I said, now I must scream of the overdose
And the lack of mercy killings.

159. U2, Indigo Girls, Natalie Merchant & Ani DiFranco
"And you know we all are doomed,
When fact is fiction and TV reality."

Indigo Girls

The less I seek my source from one definitive
The closer I am to fine

Natalie Merchant

People ruthless
People cruel
Oh the damage that some people do
With their I, Me, and Mine
It's enough to make you lose your mind.

...

Don't share the discontent
Don't share the pride.
Don't make the same mistakes
with you're own life

Ani DiFranco

And God help you if you are a Phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash.
A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying there.

Still do, matter of fact.....
DemEx

1968....................
The Actor
The curtain rises on the scene
With someone chanting to be free.
The play unfolds before my eyes,
There stands the actor who is me.
The sleeping hours take us far
From traffic, telephones and fear.
Put out your problems with the cat,
Escape until the bell you hear.

Our reasons are the same
But there's no-one we can blame
For there's nowhere we need go
And the only truth we know comes so easily.

The sound I have heard in your hello
Oh darling, you're almost part of me,
Oh darling, you're all I'll ever see.

It's such a rainy afternoon,
No point in going anywhere.
The sounds just drift across my room,
I wish this feeling I could share.

It's such a rainy afternoon,
She sits and gazes from her window.
Her mind tries to recall his face.
The feeling deep inside her grows.

Our reasons are the same
But there's no-one we can blame
For there's nowhere we need go
And the only truth we know comes so easily.

The sound I have heard in your hello,
Oh darling, you're almost part of me.
Oh darling, you're all I'll ever see.

The sound I have heard in your hello,
Oh darling, you're all I'll ever see.
Oh darling, you're almost part of me.
Oh.

171. Badlands
I always sing/scream outloud the part where it says:

Poor man wanna be rich
Rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied
Till he rules everything

The rest below:

Badlands by Bruce Springsteen

Lights out tonight
Trouble in the heartland
Got a head-on collision
Smashin' in my guts man
I'm caught in a crossfire
That I don't understand
I don't give a damn
For the same old played out scenes
I don't give a damn
For just the in-betweens
Honey I want the heart, I want the soul
I want control right now
Talk about a dream
Try to make it real
You wake up in the night
With a fear so real
Spend your life waiting
For a moment that just don't come
Well don't waste your time waiting

CHORUS:
Badlands, you gotta live it every day
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood
And these badlands start treating us good

Workin' in the fields
Til you get your back burned
Workin' 'neath the wheel
Till you get your facts learned
Baby got my facts
Learned real good right now
Poor man wanna be rich
Rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied
Till he rules everything
I wanna go out tonight
I wanna find out what I got

I believe in the love that you gave me
I believe in the hope that can save me
I believe in the faith
And I pray that some day it may raise me
Above these badlands

(CHORUS)

For the ones who had a notion
A notion deep inside
That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive
I wanna find one face that ain't looking through me
I wanna find one place
I wanna spit in the face of these badlands

176. Don't know about the best
So many come to mind, but these seem very appropriate these days:

Think For A Minute
Housemartins

Something's going on, a change is taking place
Children smiling in the street have gone without a trace
This street used to be full, it used to make me smile
And now it seems that everyone is walking single file

And many hang their heads in shame
That used to hold them high
And those that used to say hello
Simply pass you by

Think for a minute, Stop for a minute
Think for a minute, Stop for a minute

I always said it could, they never thought it would
The people look so pitiful, I'm thinking that it should
And now it's almost here, now its on its way
I can't help saying told you so and have a nice final day

And nothing I could say
Could ever make them see the light
Now apathy is happy that
It won without a fight

Think for a minute, Stop for a minute
Think for a minute, Stop for a minute

And many hang their heads in shame that used to hold them high
{Think for a minute}
And those that used to say hello simply pass you by
{Stop for a minute}

Think for a minute, Stop for a minute
Think for a minute, Stop for a minute

178. John Lennon ~ In My Life
There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I'll love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I'll love you more ~ John Lennon

There're, of course, so many more ~ little ole j.r. smith

179. and trying very hard to find a lyric that newyawker99 hates --
I'm cleanin' my jackknife when you did appear
Had to fight with you, I cut off your ear
Yo-de-lay, lil' darlin', don'tcha come here no more
Take this as a warnin' get your ear off my floor.

I throwed some sawdust where the blood puddle lie
Watched you run screamin', I prayed you would die
Yo-de-lay, lil' darlin', don'tcha come here no more
Take this as a warnin' get your ear from my floor.

Jackknife, from "Have Moicy", Michael Hurley et al., read the reviews at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000031O/qid%3D1066444235/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-1781069-6295005

Off the top of my head:

Peep-Hole by robert pollard

Give me the cost of the albatross
and wear it around my neck for size
and don't let it get you down
I'm looking inside your house
And oh and it smells so nice
Your house always looks so nice

Maybe the time is right
and promise me not to leave
I'm looking inside your brain
and Christ it's a cluttered mess
I love you, I must confess

All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy

All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come

I can't stop posting lyrics :P

Tomorrow Is A Long Time

If today was not an endless highway
If tonight was not a crooked trail
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

I can't see my reflections in the waters
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or can't remember the sound of my own name
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

There's beauty in the silver, singin' river
There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

208. "When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse..."
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I
Have become
Comfortably numb.

(from "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd)

209. Surfs up- the Beach Boys
This from their awakened post girl and car songs period. "Surfs Up followed Pet Sounds
The Beatles called "Pet Sounds" the Best album ever made.

A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
To a handsome man and baton
A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping?

Hung velvet overtaken me
Dim chandelier awaken me
To a song dissolved in the dawn
The music hall a costly bow
The music all is lost for now
To a muted trumperter swan
Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping, brother john?

Dove nested towers the hour was
Strike the street quicksilver moon
Carriage across the fog
Two-step to lamp lights cellar tune
The laughs come hard in auld lang syne

The glass was raised, the fired rose
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port adieu or die

A choke of grief hard hardened i
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry

Surf's up
Aboard a tidal wave
Come about hard and join
The young and often spring you gave
I heard the word
Wonderful thing
A children's song

Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
A children's song
Have you listened as they played
Their song is love
And the children know the way
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child
Child, child, child, child, child
Na na na na na na na na
Child, child, child, child, child
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child

210. OMG Luckyluke...
I was just going to post that VERY lyric from "Comfortably Numb" - It's one of my favorites of all time...especially...."the child is grown, the dream is gone." Makes me shiver every time I hear it.
Also for me:
U2-Joshua Tree "Running to Stand Still"- "You've got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice...."
Fleetwood Mac - "Landslide" - "Mirror in the sky what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean's tides....can I handle the seasons of my life....I don't know.
The Beatles - "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" - "with every mistake we must surely be learning" GREAT THREAD!!!!

212. The Killer awoke before dawn.....
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 10:35 PM by Billy_Pilgrim

This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be, So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane, All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best, The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us, The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a chance with us X3
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end

One of my all-time favorite groups. :loveya:

And let's not forget:

People are strange
When you're a stranger
Faces look ugly
When you're alone.

214. This one.......

is dedicated to our Commander In Thief........

Men walkin' 'long the railroad tracks
Goin' someplace there's no goin' back
Highway patrol choppers comin' up over the ridge

Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge
Shelter line stretchin' 'round the corner
Welcome to the new world order
Families sleepin' in their cars in the Southwest
No home no job no peace no rest

The highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad

He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
Preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
Waitin' for when the last shall be first
And the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
Got a one-way ticket to the promised land
You got a hole in your belly and gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the city aqueduct

Now Tom said " Mom, wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight 'gainst the blood
And hatred in the air
Look for me Mom, i'll be there
Wherever there's somebody fightin' for a place to stand
Or decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes Mom, you'll see me"

The highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of Tom Joad

215. Pink Floyd, "Two Suns in the Sunset"
Two Suns in the Sunset Lyrics

In my rear view mirror the sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
And I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirm suspicions
Of the holocaust to come.

The wire that holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way
And suddenly it's day again.
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done.
Two suns in the sunset
Hmmmmmmmmmm
Could be the human race is run.

Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide towards the big truck
"Oh no!"
" Daddy, Daddy!"
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear.
And you'll never hear their voices
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
Ashes and diamonds
Foe and friend
We were all equal in the end.

"...and now the weather. Tomorrow will be cloudy with scattered showers
spreading from the east ... with an expected high of 4000 degrees
Celsius"

216. I played tonight...3 songs, lyrics from each:
I slammed into the great black side, the mountainside
where fear and doubt and jealousy and compromise
and all their friends reside
I slammed so hard it changed the tides like the day seas
and the moon, she frowned upon me,
do you know what i mean?
(me)
-------------------------------------
two thousand other stupid reasons
why we should suffer all this
I just can't seem to find a reason
just comb my hair while I come to a decision on this
(english beat)
-------------------------------------
you know I will be loosened
from bonds that hold me fast
and the chains hung all around me
will fall away at last
(waterboys)

225. "A Change is Gonna Come" Sam Cooke
Still relevant 4 decades later:

There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will
