Awesome (and disturbing) website.... perverted-justice.com
Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 04:05 PM by Dookus
www.perverted-justice.com

This website is run by people who pose as young teens in regional chatrooms and trap wanna-be pedophiles. They post the offenders pics, phone numbers and the entire chat thread.

Good for them! This is the kind vigilante justice I can support.

1. Interesting site
I wonder if these people turn over the offenders to the local authorities?

2. no... they don't
primarily because no real crimes are committed. But I imagine readers of the site probably contact local law enforcement.

3. the trouble with vigilante "justice"
... is that they don't have the same standards of proof, or the accountability, of the real criminal justice system. the concept of what constitutes a "crime" less clear. there are less protections for the accused. it may sound fine and dandy when the accused are people you don't know, just generic "bad guys". but think a bit harder before you applaud. tomorrow they may be accusing you or one of your friends.

4. well that's why
they post the entire conversation. You can see for yourself what these creeps are attempting to do.

They're not physically harming or threatening these people - they're just posting exactly what the pervs type.

They're not being criminally prosecuted. They're just being exposed.

And if one of my friends was trying to boff a 13 year old girl, I'd hope he was uncovered before he actually did it.

6. and who ensures the authenticity of this "evidence"?
who guarantees that they don't edit it to make it more incriminating?

or make it up out of whole cloth, in some cases? perhaps, to settle personal grudges? or maybe to "help" the government discredit certain pesky critics (eg, Scott Ritter)?

they could easily be sued for slander.

So far nobody has sued them.

15. One delusional girl named Putnam scared a whole state
into hunting witches and killing over 500 innocent women by horrific means.
It can, and does happen.

What about the false memory people? The ones who keep looking for satanic cults where none exist?

Or the myth of strangers abducting children. Of course it is the FBI who keeps that one going, so they can collect more fingerprints. Never mind that their own data show that the overwhelming majority, up to 96% of child abductions are by estranged family members.

Is pedophillia a problem? Sure it is. Is it a bigger problem than it has been in the past? I don't think so. It is just more reported and people are more aware of it.

21. I agree with you on all of those things...
I'm a major skeptic, and I know a lot the harm caused by false memories, mass hysteria, etc.

In the case of this website, though, it's not a baseless accusation. They publish EXACTLY what somebody posts. They're not executing these people, imprisoning them, or even bringing charges against them. They simply publicize what they type.

However, I don't believe it is.

8. but you're missing the point..
this is not the government prosecuting people. It's individuals posting EXACT transcripts of what transpires in an online chat.

As I posted upthread, if they are in any way maliciously editing the chats to make it appear somebody said or did something they really didn't, they would be subject to libel laws, as well as other civil lawsuits.

9. The broader point
...Is that even exact transcripts are subject to interpretation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro-pedophile (like I needed to say that), but I can tell you, if anyone presented me with a transcript of discussions my father-in-law and I have after the second scotch, they'd yank my ACLU card so fast you'd hear the sonic boom. In that example, you'd miss the point that we amuse ourselves by parroting the mindless blowhards we've met throughout the week.

If I create a website that calls itself "terrorist transcripts", for another example, and post exact transcripts of some DUer's conversations online, I'm making a category and context for the text that isn't necessarily appropriate.

It's just ugly. And I don't support it. As was said earlier, there are no boundaries, no codes of conduct on the internet. Remember the anti-choice kiddies and their "Doctors of Death" page, where they listed names of doctors that performed abortions? Everything they posted was completely true, as well.

14. I wholeheartedly agree.
This is not justice. This is deception, and I actually got the impression that the people running the site were just getting their jollies off of humiliating people ("justifiably"). If you read the conversations, although not all of them are this way, many of them are just your typical teenage or early-20's male starting up a conversation with a girl. They hear that she's underage, they start to back away (even though they know they're just typing anyway). Now, here's the nasty part: the pseudo-14-year-old will bait the guy by saying something like "I'm so horny" or even something as blatant as "You wanna have sex? Can we meet somewhere?"
They're just playing off of the guy's emotions. The guys don't really think anything is going to come of it, most of the time, I'm sure, and they allow themselves to get seduced.
This web site actually made me really angry.

16. Sorry...
but if anybody thinks it's OK to propose sexual contact with a 14 year old girl, he deserves to be humiliated.

I've read a lot of the listings - I really DON'T see the faux-girls going out of their way to seduce these pervs. They don't PM anybody - the pervs PM them.

I have been online and been privated by underage persons. As soon as I learn their age, I wish them well and close the window. How hard is that?

If you read the Rights of Reply that the "offenders" post, they're almost ALL contrite. They know they did something wrong.

If this site prevents even a couple of these pervs from actually following through on their designs, then that's a good thing.

32. WAIT WAIT WAIT....!
You have GOT to be kidding!

"If this site prevents even a couple of these pervs from actually following through on their designs, then that's a good thing."

Good grief, that's exactly what people said about Patriot Act! "Who cares if a few rights get trampled, if it saves one American life, it's OK."

Are you kidding? Did I miss a sarcasm emoticon? Where exactly are you willing to scrap civil rights? What's the hot-button issue that you're so afraid of that you'll do it?

The RW has terrorism. You've got pedophilia?

33. Oh I know that
there are some really nasty pervs on there, but I also read quite a few where the guy said things like "Oh, you're too young for me," and then the girl proceeds to try to turn him on. These folks need to get their SOP's down, because that's wrong. If the guy isn't going out of his way to hit on young girls, he's not doing anything wrong, because all men have libidos, and all these people are trying to do is take advantage of that fact to humiliate them. The way they're doing it, it's gross.
If they changed their approach it would be more legitimate.

17. If a 20 yr old male who wants sex with a 17 yr old female is a pedophile
than I live in the wrong country!!!! or even a 21 vs 17....there is only 4 years difference and the female is probably MORE mature than the 21 year old male whose hormoes are dictating his life...

Now if they ONLY went after letches...like 40-50 year old men looking for underage girls...I say GO FOR IT!!!...and Women for boys...and Men for boys...et all...the age difference MUST be a generation or I am not interested!!!!

honestly... the 20 yo/17 yo thing doesn't bother me.

I don't think the "pretenders" here EVER claim to be anything older than 14. I think that's inexcusable.

But trust me when I say that the "girls" all pretend to be 13-14 years old. Well, I can't say ALL with 100% confidence because I haven't read all the postings, but the ones I DID read conform to that fact.

19. I'm not so sure that this is exactly pedophilia
Almost all of these guys are in their early 20's (A few are 18 and 19). The 'undercover' tend to act like they are 14, 15, 16, and even 17.

While a lot of these cases can be considered statuotory rape, I wouldn't consider them to be cases of pedophilia. There is no force or attack involved, and I would normally consider pedophilia to be acts against really young children.

I'm not saying that what these guys do is right, just pointing out the difference.

20. I read a lot of the postings...
and I don't recall any of them in which the "poser" was older than 14. I could be wrong, because I didn't read the majority of them.

I also saw many listings where the "perp" was much older than early 20's.

I agree it would be wrong to condemn a 19 year old for hitting on a 17 year old. That's not what the site is about.

These are men who are going after pre-pubescent or just barely-pubescent kids (they do occasionally pose as young boys, too).
