I'm in that stolen computer from UC Berkeley -- need advice
What should I do to protect myself?

I'm sure the guy who stole it was just looking for a few bucks. But now, he knows what's in there. He can sell it to someone who engages in identity theft.

I have a credit report service that sends me an e-mail whenever someone accesses my credit information. Will that alert me to any potential problems?

Anyone here with expertise on identity theft?

2. I donated to the University long ago
and I think I have new numbers. Do I still need to change the numbers?

I'm in the database, also.

5. somebody started using my number a few years ago, I caught it
fairly quickly (online rather than waiting for next monthly statement)

& the C.C. company just issued me a new card with a different number

3. Make a report to the US Secret Service
They are part of the Treasury Dept. and investigate identity fraud. At least they did when my husband's identity was stolen a few years ago.
We notified the credit card company, had security passwords added to the account, and the credit card companies took responsibilities for the bills run up by the thieves.
Eventually we figured out that my husband was one of many ex-New Yorkers whose SS numbers were stolen from the NY SS office and sold to a fraud ring.

4. Thanks, all
No sign of fraud yet, but I think I will call the credit card companies and alert them to the potential problem. Also, ask their advice.
