DVD recording software tips

Hiya everyone!

I just got my first DVD-R drive, and it's great fun. I have a copy of Pinicle instant Copy, and it's working fine so far, but I don't know if it's versatile enough for what I want to do.

For example, I'd like to author some VCDs wich video tracks from elsewhere, like taking 5 tracks from Simpsons Episodes and putting them together.

Ultimately I'd also like to be able to actually edit a DVD video file, e.g. take the visuals, remove the audio track and add another, or alter the audio track, or excise some scenes, and then reassemble the film. I'd like to do this with both original and stock (or previously released) footage.

Also, what's a good (and cheap for now) way to convert Analog VHS footage to DVD.

But for now, I'd like a program that will shut up and copy whatever I tell it to. I'd also like a program that will take a Region 2 disc and make it Region 1 or region free.

Any tips?

1. I just got into this myself, here's what i know so far

If you want to copy a dvd, most dvd's will need to fit on 2 dvd's unless you compress it or shrink it in some fashion. I am using DVD2one which will remove the region code and the macrovision etc.. If the movie does not fit on one dvd (most don't) you can "shrink" it. Depending on the title, it's usually not noticeable. you can choose which audio tracks to include or exclude, as well as join dvd files together. For example, if you had a dvd with multiple episodes, you can string together different episodes from different discs for a custom made dvd of your favorites.

In order to do any copying, you will need to extract the dvd files onto your hard drive. I am using SmartRipper. Sorry I don't know more, I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone offers advice on your other topics. I'm interested in knowing as well.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into DVD2one. I'd really like to be able to strip the region coding. My region free DVD player leaves a lot to be desired.

3. Best software I've heard of..

is Ulead DVD Workshop. It's supposed to be the ultimate video authoring software.
